Can sex overcome religion? You know what I mean!
In some religions, sex is a major part of the rituals.
Which ones? Many talk of repressive sexual thoughts, which ones promote it during their rituals?
@drkhannabis I know of one religion in India where ritualized sex is part of their worship. I googled "ritual sex" and got lots of interesting hits.
@drkhannabis Hindu has tantric sex, and I believe a branch of Buddhism practices it as well. Remember the Kama Sutra? More practical than the stupid bible.
The neo druids? There was lots of innuendo in their rituals I remember. I did manage to read Aleister Crowley before my mother stole my collection of books about alternate theology. She must have conveniently forgotten her commandments that day!
You're so right! There were fertility festivals that incorporated sexual union with religion. The Greek mystery religions also included sexual frenzy in their rituals, ie Dionysus & bacchanalia.
I'm assuming you mean the "shame" that some religions place on sex, for women or same sex couples anyway, making one feel "guilty" for enjoying it? It can take years or decades, to get past it, if ever, after leaving the religion. Once it's in a person's inner psyche, it never really goes away, but it's fun trying to overcome it with an understanding partner.
So well said.
I was wondering how my question would be interpreted. Certainly the condemnation of human sexuality is a major part of religion. And yes, it can be a struggle to find one's sexuality & be comfortable .
If the number of rogue priests is anything to go by then sex is definitely a stronger human motivation than religion.
I was very friendly with a school chum who was funny , daring and witty. He "disappeared" at the age of eleven to go to a distant priest training college. It was he who started my real (none) religious interest, as we had some stimulating exchanges of conversation in the years that followed . Then I lost touch with him - probably he was told not to write after a confession. Then a few years later he appeared on the front page of the biggest labour newspaper here in the UK. He had been unable to resist jumping into bed to comfort one of his flock.
It is so sad this celibacy thing and they are still arguing about it.
You understand my somewhat veiled point. Religion is corrupt!
@Atheist3 Certainly my friend was not corrupt . He was responding to his natural urges. He would have made a great father in the non religious sense.
I personally find it disconcerting when a woman cries out another person's name during sex, like: "Oh GOD!" or "YES, JESUS!" Use my name, use my name!
It could be worse! She could be calling out your ex-wife's name!
What do you mean by overcome?. Some of the randiest women I have known were Christian church going women. They love sex. Look how Christians get found out for their infidelities or worse for child pornography or sexual abuse of minors. They loves them some sex.
Not for long.
Ain't that the troof! Why is it that religion gets to dictate the sexual culture?
I'd say sex regularly overcomes religion. Sometimes only temporarily. Look at all those phony-baloney "christians" who preach their bullshit and then bugger the choir boys. Religion is mental, sex is biological.
That's why religion has tried to incorporate sex... Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) have tried to control it more than incorporate it...
Yes, desire/lust can overcome inhibitions caused by religious teachings! Causing me to say, there is a gawd.....
Real juicy pressed against the wall type lust...?
Moved by the spirit, as it were…
@DavidRooney oh hell ya! I'm old, not dead....
@AnneWimsey that would be a kink too far
I think sex is more powerful than religion for sure! I mean, preachers and Christian leaders commit sexual crimes, against both boys and girls.
Exactly!
Sex certainly comes before religion, but I don't think it overcomes it.
When I told my buddies that I had slept with 10 women, they said, "I overcame."
Actually, I don't know what you mean.
Simple! The sexual act is predicated by emotion & so is religion. Which do you prefer?
Oh god, oh god, oh god,...
Nice try, horndog. "Hope is not a method," I told pregnant teens.
Ironic, isn't it, that without religion, they would doubtless have been taught what methods there are.
I was casually listening in once when my daughter, 15 at the time, was on the phone with one of her friends whose boyfriend didn't want her on the pill because "it messes with your hormones".
I will forever hear my daughter's voice replying sarcastically, "You know what else messes with your hormones? PREGNANCY!" Fortunately, she won the argument.
When sex is strong, religion take a low key in a relationship. When the sex takes the back seat, religion gets strong. Religion is the enemy of sex.
We take God's name in vain during sex. We really do not mean to invoke God.
Suggesting an alternative to "Oh God" during sex may actually help some people who still continually invoke him. I have done it myself, I must confess.
Somehow "Oh Aunt Jemima" is the only thing that comes quickly to mind.
@Mcflewster Ha.. Ha.. That works too.
Dude, My older brother was a rogue in high school and all of the girls he had were 'religious', so yes.
What school did he go to & does he still their addresses?
Umm, it's easier to f^ck a woman than it is to f^ck a religion.
I guess it depends who is fucking who?
Ok! What happens when you fall in love with a Catholic girl & you're an atheist? Does love (sex) conquer all?
@Atheist3 Certainly not in my case!
