I see this here all the time. It basically is a fight to establish that "my way of being an atheist or an agnostic is better/more correct then your way of being an atheist or an agnostic." Atheist, agnostic, religious are all ideas. We should be free to chose what ever ideas or combination of ideas seems to make sense to us. What we should object to very strenuously is when people begin to require that we accept and follow their ideas on these topics. Historically and in the present, the various religious communities has/have been (with a few minor exceptions) very adamant that we follow their specific religious ideas. This is oppression in its most basic form and it must be opposed. Yet too often on this site I read comments which put the shoe on the other foot, with the apparent intended goal of having people accept and follow a specific style of being an atheist or an agnostic. Not really different than the religious fanatics.

Fuck all y'all.

@Gwendolyn2018 Redundancy is sometimes appropriate. 😀

@Gwendolyn2018 It's just a Southernism. It really requires no translation.
Thanks for playing.
😉

@maturin1919 It does. Y'all.

@maturin1919 OMG I'm dyin'!!!! LOL

@maturin1919 Just remember, lube is your friend. 😉

@Gwendolyn2018 no, "y'all is "you all"...leaving out the pronoun changes everything.

A fight to establish that "my way of being an atheist or an agnostic is better/more correct than your way of being an atheist or an agnostic."

That's what it is and I don't give a duck! Won't give a chicken either. Have it your way.

How can someone not believe in something better than someone else?

4

That's part of what keeps this site interesting - all the different views.

My feeling is, that someone can say whatever they wish - I may take it in and ponder it - or not, but I'll decide which path I'm on, without needing to satisfy anyone else's mandates.

I’ve seen this here, too. Not a majority but a vocal minority.

I agree and I ignore it....

People like to quibble. I don't think the subject matters much.

Excellent point.

2

How many different ways can one NOT believe in a gawd? ... I understand your point completely, though. I'm not so sure that it's residual "religion" that makes folks behave that way, folks just want others to agree and applaud their ideas, and feel a sense of community. ... And btw, I think all the hair splitting as to who believes what AND how much, is silly.

I'm pretty happy just being a non-believer.

2

I would not put atheism ,agnosticism, and religion into one bag of "ideas", conflating a great variety of things into one thing is the reson for misunderstanding and debates.
Agnostic- knowledge statement
Atheist- belief statement
Religious- worshiping a dieity via specific rites and rituals.

These are very different and not confused as virtually the same, just different "ideas".

I think everyone should apply the scientific method and find out for themselves that religion is just a scam based on mythology. Blind belief is not good for anyone. Facts and evidence are much better.

Divisive trolls are infiltrating every online social network. I view anyone who persists in dividing us as a troll.

@maturin1919 Divisiveness is the goal of every troll.

@BitFlipper Looks like you just avoided a troll. Bravo!

@maturin1919 Nice try. Play again later?

@maturin1919 I"ll quote YOU "Divisiveness is the goal of every troll." Inflammatory, on topic? Doesn't matter because "Divisiveness is the goal of every troll."

@maturin1919 YOUR opinion. Or can trolls change their minds in 3 comment thread? LOL, bye...(troll)

It happens on every non believer site I've ever encountered.

People like to be right and like to tell others why they're right, especially if they can prove someone else wrong in the proccess.

EDIT: ...they think they can prove...

As someone who is on this site normally several times a day for about 2 years, I take Great issue with your assertion......I do see lots of discussion & interaction, but not the enmity you claim

There is a simple cure for what ails you...the block feature. It is good medicine.

1

Simple either you are or you are not!

Sitting on the fence, you get splinters and poked in places you may not like!!!

"Atheist, agnostic, religious are all ideas. We should be free to chose what ever ideas or combination of ideas seems to make sense to us."

I strongly disagree.

If for example ." . . However, Muslim proponents of FGM also stress the religious necessity." taken from [stopfgmmideast.org] "makes sense" as the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia to that person, such "Ideas" should not be tolerated. Sadly, this example extends to other harmful positions (no rubbers etc. ) another example is those who choose to believe climate change in not real because they believe their god will keep us all fat and happy as we exhaust the carbon fossil resources changing the chemistry and climate of our earth.

You can take the position that "religion" has nothing to do with climate change deniers or those that cut young girls female genitalia but according to (for example) B Ezawa, JM Fagan - 2015 - rucore.libraries.rutgers.edu "Religious beliefs a root cause of the denial of climate change being anthropogenic" there are many such citations and other non beneficial products of thought committed by theists but you get the idea.

As for discussions about why type of atheist/agnostic is better. . .

As long as they are not theist and assert their sky daddy (insert nonsense here) - - I really don't care.

I do hold in somewhat higher esteem atheists that through the logical and rigorous process of skepticism (using the scientific method) have determined there is insufficient evidence to assert "god is real" and are able to question theists to have the theists attempt to defend their "god is real" assertion over those atheists that just don't care to examine the topic, but both are good positions.

1

The "I have to be an agnostic because I don't know if something scientific might prove the existence of god; therefore you shouldn't be atheistic." argument?

Or maybe the "Atheism is a religion all unto itself." argument?

1

Human nature sparks disagreements in methods and beliefs. I do not use the scientific method I just know I don't believe and I'm happy for you folks that need to prove you don't believe and are able to prove it.

I just pass those arguments by and go to more interesting topics. I learned a long time ago that people are going to believe what they're going to believe so I let it be.

I live by a motto: my freedom ends where thy one begins. It's a shame many people don't know how to respect the other's freedom and opinions.

@maturin1919, when an opinion doesn't change a thing in my life, I prefer saying "Ok, whatever" and carry on. Also depends on what it is, of course.

@maturin1919, most of the time I respect it. I may not agree, of course. If someone thinks blue is an ugly colour, I respect that opinion but I simply don't care much about it as it doesn't make a difference. This something simple and insignificant, of course but it will depend on what it is. If someone has the opinion that God exists, I can respect that, although I disagree. If someone thinks my favourite band sucks, I can respect that as well, it means their music doesn't work for that person. These are small things that you can accept easily. Now, depends of what it is and how much will affect my life or other people's lives. Usually, as the opinions are just the way people think, most of the time I think to myself "Whatever!!! It floats that person's boat, I have more important things to worry about!" I don't think this is disrespecting other's opinion but it's the way I see it. Probably you see it differently than I do.

1

Meh. People are free ask me to follow their ideas, I'm free to say no. Ahhhh, freedom!

1

To me? I'm not atheist, not Christian, not Muslim, not Buddhist, nor part of one of the other 500 religions. I don't belong to any group that tries to convince me of any idea.
To religious people, I always say: "I'm not religious". And actually it is never a problem. I had the experience that telling someone that I'm part of whatever religion or telling whoever that I'm an atheist, is experienced as offensive. Like you are the enemy. Non-religious states that I'm neutral. And indeed, I don't care what others believe, as long as they are happy. In a conversation, I am always respectful and in principle, I just tell them to think and tell them that if there is truth, there should be proof of it. The content of a book is no proof. Even if it is praised to be holy, it is just a book with pages that someone or several people have written. In the past, so the writer(s) are dead and can't be questioned.

In the arena of ideas one will encounter those who feel passionately about their ideas & they will fervently express those ideas if not always in ways that one thinks is appropriate. How nice it would be if everyone would would agree with me. lol

You write "my way of being an atheist or an agnostic is better/more correct then your way of being an atheist or an agnostic." but fail to cite examples.

If me having no time for the willfully ignorant is me being oppressive of them, then so be it.
