Would 60% of Americans actually vote for an Atheist???
Seems the polls are not always what the seem!!!
I suppose I would trust Gallop. We put a rapist in the White House. I guess anything can happen.
Captain's log supplemental: We've probably had several atheists in the White House. But, to get there, they would have had to lie and say that they were Christian.
I am sure that many of our early presidents that claimed to be diest were in fact atheist. They still would have a slim chance if they admitted it today.
Polls! You say POLLS?! That is what got us in this mess to begin with. Polls said Hilary would win so stay home. No one would vote for you-know-who. Well someone did and so polls be damned. Sorry for the bit of a rant.
The popular polls said it would be Hillary. If you took the time to break down the polls by electoral college rules, you would have read a different story. I know I did.
Russia beet Clinton with hackers, Facebook and James Comey.
@MrDMC See, I see it a different way. If the electorate wasn't so fucking stupid, hackers, FB, and Comey wouldn't have been enough.
Yes, we must not be vulgar and lewd to a mystical being know one has ever seen or has spoken too!!!
Polls are useless.. Polls predicted trump would lose...
The sad reality, IMO, there is probably not another segment more in "the closet" than atheists. I understand. It is such a pain in the ass when it comes up and super Christian feels the need to talk about how their (insert B.S.).
There are 7-8 states that forbid an atheist to be on the ballot. But this is OK.

Too many states and local entities have laws disqualifying nonbelievers from holding office, so atheists/agnostics can’t even make it onto the ballot for voters to consider the choice.
Texas is like this. Our state constitution says
"No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office . . . provided he acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being." (Caps from source). Article 1 Section 4.
@towkneed Wait until Donald is re-elected!
Polls aren't nothing, but how people respond to a hypothetical and how they act in real life can well be two very different things. It's like a scenario that's been repeated countless times in my consulting career; you sell a client on a solution, they are "excited" about (the idea of) it, but when they actually have to whip out the checkbook ... or when they actually have to relinquish control ... or when they actually have to change "the way it's always been done" ... or when they get strong employee pushback ...
I'd vote to replace God with an atheist, or a DOG.
My answer to this titular question is, "I sure fkg hope so!" But who knows?
If I were to run for an office I'd probably try to avoid my being ag/ath as much as possible if I could. Mainly because I'd hate to risk it on the assumption that I'm therefore evil, a satanist, unfit to govern [big LOL here, considering the current administration], etc.
So Bernie (a self proclaimed socialist) would be 15% less likely to get votes than an atheist. For Bernie fans it does not look good.
It's actually looking great for Bernie. He was in the lead going into Nevada and has now won there, leaving his opponents far behind.
