Scrolling through Facebook, I've noticed hundreds of prayers to a god to help protect against Covid19. I respect that and acknowledge people need to find comfort however they need to. With that said, I'm thinking of making a post with the agnostic.com website; offering a place for agnostics/atheists/skeptics to go for community. Anyone opposed to this? Do you think it will spur trolls onto our website? OPINIONS PLEASE!
Most people on the planet are really, fucking stupid, just a heads up. They would pray to their grandma's ass if they thought it would fix their real world problems. Staying at home to limit contagion will help but most of them want to go to their church and pray instead. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
The people of magical thinking will eliminate themselves. Robert Heinlein the great fiction author said, "Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime: the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity."
@Msgtthomyv Well I'm definitely not about to try and contradict Heinlein but the question which does interest me is how many of the rest of us do they drag down with them?
So here's my update. I posted a message about religious people finding comfort in prayer during this time. I mentioned fellow atheists/agnostics/skeptics/humanists would find community on the website. Not one person liked or shared! Not sure what I was expecting but I feel good about reaching out. Anyhow, stay safe and well!
Please repost on my Facebook I have 4998 friends room for you to post with thousands of Atheists in or out they will respond to your modest invitation while they expect hard core secularism from me
Spur trolls? Trolls happen to be great foils! They unintentionally serve as illustrative 'set-ups' for deprogramming of others following conversation threads they invade. Nothing succeeds in spotlighting fear and ignorance better than some juvenile, programmed troll trying to make sense out of nonsense.
One just ought to bear in mind that arguments presented to 'trolls' will NEVER effect changes in their minds or attitudes; only in the minds of readers and marginal participants in the discussions.
With little to no ego investment in points discussed, readers are more free to reason within themselves which points of view appear to make more sense and why. To fear what a troll propagates is to fear the possibility of validity of their viewpoints; a superb example of 'fearing fear itself'.
I welcome trolls.
I must admit to fun times trolling trolls....ah boredom....
@Freespirit64 I like a little recreational trolling myself, on occasion. Trolling is in the post of the beholder ...
Now I'm just commenting on my own country, but reading this only cements the idea in my head that a huge factor contributing to our mishandling of this current event (and many others) is directly related to us not prioritizing educating our citizens in a scientific manner from the very start.
I could expound on that, but I'm sure you get the gist.
If you feel compelled to attempt to educate, then do it. Please. As for troll engagement, don't ever talk in absolutes and post most things as questions. In other words, you can get a point across without being confrontational. They're looking for that confrontation and they've got an arsenal of misinformation to throw at you.
It doesn't matter. Here is where the silent ones, the shy ones, the undecided ones observe and make many determinations....
If I make even one person at least consider an alternate point of view, I've done a good thing.
Good luck.
I feel your strength and agree.
It feels kind of like being a 'conductor' on a cyber 'underground railroad', leading runaways to emancipation.
@Silver1wun Indeed
You sound very intelligent and caring. Thank you for that. No reason to wage war on Christians,
@NormaGriffith1 only when they try to infiltrate the government.....
I never get excited when dealing with believers. I simply state facts and leave it at that. My only retort comes when they start name calling. I simply say that if you are reduced to name calling you have lost the argument! Then I leave!
I also found this site through Facebook. I think this site does a pretty good job of weeding out trolls with the level system. I don’t think ( I hope I don’t get proven wrong) a troll would take the time to level up just to harass a group of critical thinkers.
sometimes i find it more helpful to speak to people within their own bubble than from outside. instead of "there is no god" i try "god helps those who help themselves. when people want to congregate i quote matthew 6:5-6 where it says 5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
not bad for someone who has never been christian, eh?
be that as it may, i am not opposed to your suggested post but i have no idea whether it will spur more trolls than we already get, or whether anyone will find it helpful. the whole site already IS a place to come for community. do we need a special place within that place? i can only speak for myself and say i would have no use for it. that doesn't mean no one would. but i wouldn't.

That's one of my favorite verses.
The other is Luke 7:8, “For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.” Jesus (in the next verse) recognized the lawful authority of the centurion. It befuddles the heck out of all the prisoners (have I mentioned, I work in corrections) who think they should be above the rules because they go to services at the chapel and read the bible in their cells. Especially the ones with "Only God can judge me" tattooed on their arms.
@Paul4747 To think that you are going to be judged, need to be judged, or will be judged must show a sensitive and fearful personality. Having once been religious I will admit I've had to fight off these thoughts and always question others who appear to have them. This is another reason that religion spoils and ruins everything.
Better they pray with one another in confined spaces, than prey on the rest of us.
Do it. You can even boost it for $10 and run it for a week and get it in front of thousands more viewers. No one cares about trolls.
I'm not a big fan of prayer as it does nothing. If God exists and he/she/it heard those prayers then that deity is intentionally letting people suffer and die based on a disease that he/she/it could have prevented existing in the first place. And what happens when loved ones die that are religious: we don't say "oh don't worry they're just being transported to the next planet or existence 2.0." We cry, we get upset, and for good reasons.
not quite. christians talk about them making the journey to heaven and looking down on us and how they will rejoin the loved one, one day, when they die. XD
@demifeministgal What they really want is life without problems! That's it! Standing around and praising the God will get boring real fast!
Early on , a couple of people of Asian decent were sliced , because someone chose that method to , " get back ," at China for , "creating ," the disease , and sending it here . If you chose this time to advertise Agnostic, com , will you be setting up us as another target , that they can claim is the reason for the disease being crfeated and spreading here ?
This site occasionally runs stuff on FB, that's where I found it. IMO let Admin do their job

It might spur trolls but that is the chance ya have to take when you put yourself out there! I think it's a good idea!
Lets see?
We shall now bow our heads ,
As we gather to hope for a resolution to our current crisis we should remember that hope without action is equivalent to wishing in a well. Let us not wish in a well but go forward, reaching out to those around us and taking action to mitigate the harms of our current situation and preparing ourselves to make the world after this crisis better for all our fellow citizens.
Everybody say-- Amen!
lolololol
People are lighting in my country today (india) to prevent the covid19
I don't think they have to do that but they do it
Because of doing this they can get infected by others (undetected covid19 infected person)
They just do it because they do believe
I do not want them to do this. I tried But I'm not able to do that
How can i ......
Please let me know comment below
I also have noticed the prayers for getting through covid-19 unscathed. I get that prayers and “god” are like I don’t know a security blanket for people to hold onto when they are scared and don’t know what to expect.
Quoting Heinlein again-- "History does not record anywhere at anytime a religion that has any rational basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it!"
Good idea. But they are a nasty bunch and love to destroy.
My take on this is to quit looking for trouble.
I suppose its possible, but trolls will become apparent soon enough. Do we have a facitily for reporting them?
@creative51 Thanks for letting me know about this. I'm new around here.
