everything eats something that was or is alive. ever looked at how brutal nature is?
humans take habitat for everything they do, kill trillions of insects every day just driving plus much more.
I believe in meatless weekdays- all of them.
I do, also.
I am looking forward to eating more veggies as the seasons wear on. Focusing my eating what's seasonally available is a good plan for me. We can only have plans that involve eating the same things over the course of each week, if we are getting some of our food flown in. Doubly true for many highly processed vegetarian or vegan foods.
I was vegetarian for many years. Unfortunately my body decided it it just wasn't going to play nice with that arrangement anymore. Still basically just use meat as a condiment. I usually get my milk from a neighbor whose cow is her baby. Even though I imagine dairy farmers exist who are indifferent, but I've known quite a few , and they all were very affectionate with their cows.. However, the commercial meat industry has become a brutal thing from start to finish in most cases. Unless meat is from a local farmer, the growth process is just nasty. Take a drive through southern Kansas these days and you will quickly figure it out.
Those billions of animals would never have existed except for our efforts. Facts are facts, and one fact is that we live in a world where animals eat animals.
Cattle are being raised all around me—I can hear them lowing out on the pastures. They are well tended and treated as the valuable assets that they are. Your assertions are not facts but propaganda.
I will continue to eat meat in moderation.
"Those billions of animals would never have existed except for our efforts. "
So I guess it's OK for us to kill them since our "efforts " brought them into being? Think about that before replying... Please..
@Cutiebeauty OK, I’ve thought about it.
If the animals are not to be slaughtered and eaten as was their purpose in being raised, than what do you propose should be done with them? It would hardly be any more humane to turn them loose. They have to be fed and tended or the bulk of them would starve or meet with other hideous deaths. Pigs survive well in the wild, given the right habitat, but cattle need pastures and hay, and to live well they need mineral supplements. Sometimes they need veterinary care, and sometimes help in giving birth.
What you are proposing is basically genocide or annihilation of domestic cattle. Please think about that.
@WilliamFleming I'm not saying we should turn all the animals loose.. I'm just saying that meatless Monday's would be a good idea for health reasons.. Start with one meatless day .. Then maybe add salad Saturday's or soupy Sunday's or even fishy Friday's.. It doesn't have to happen all at once... I still eat meat, just not a lot of meat...
@Cutiebeauty That sounds very reasonable. I am trying to go by the advice of my VA doctors: in a day, eat no more meat than the size of a deck of playing cards.
You sound like me. We like to provoke controversy.
@WilliamFleming I heard of that.. The size of a deck of cards not a single playing card... That would be one really skinny burger
@Cutiebeauty Oops, gotta fix that.
Not sure how not eating on Monday's changes anything in the meme. It may cut back on the profits of big agri-business, but they would still practice their businesses as they do. In relation to the meme, would be more inclined to want our systems which provide food to do it in a more humane manner as I don't believe that eating meat, in itself, is an immoral or unethical act.
I believe in better, more ecologically friendly farming practices, certainly, and I think cutting back on meat is a great idea. But I also think the idea of an entirely vegan/vegetarian world is unrealistic to say the least, and that it would behoove a lot of the more militant "activists" to step back and realize that focusing on that one particular outcome does their cause a grave disservice. Myself, I enjoy a good black bean burger (when someone else makes it) and most of my meals throughout the day are 100% meatless. I avoid fast food chains like the plague unless I am in serious need of sustenance and in fact I try not to go out to eat as often as I can, and most of the meat in my freezer comes from the Co-op, which gets its supplies from small (usually) local farmers. I think if we pushed for reduction and opted for small farmers with veganism/vegetarianism being offered for those that want to go the extra mile, there might actually be some progress made.
I eat organic, cage-free, free range eggs, and yogurt and nonfat dry milk from cruelty-free sources.
And maybe a little fish.
Works for me.
People who eat meat, chicken, etc. from agribusiness factory farms are Neandrathals.
Of course the practice should be stamped out through education and public policy. I think it'll eventually happen as our technology develops.
Never heard of Meatless Mondays, but sure, why not?
What'd neaderthals ever do to you?
@MarkiusMahamius Oh no, don't get me wrong, they were VERY successful for a very long time.
But let's face it, they weren't all that bright.
@Storm1752 they were outcompeted by local homonsapiens but is there evidence they weren't that bright, or just that they were either less lucky, or slightly less bright than the hine sapiens?
@MarkiusMahamius Okay, they weren't AS bright and yes, they were unlucky as well, if you consider the 'missing link' was probably extraterrestials coming along and genetically modifying homo sapiens, not Neandrathals. Or maybe humans USED to be Neandrathals.
Most likely the former. Idk. I'll have to Google it.
And maybe a little fish.
So it's ethical to take a hook with an invisible line on it, hide the hook in food a fish thinks is a tasty morsel, and when the fish tries to eat it the fish gets pulled by the hook in its mouth up to be killed and eaten? But I suppose you make sure you only eat net caught fish despite the damadge that does.
I neither believe nor disbelieve, if I feel a bit bloated or irregular I will go meatless for a day or two, does me the world of good, then when I feel the need for meat, poultry or fish again I will eat it.
I am a great believer in listening to your own body for your nutritional needs and using food as medicine.
As a child I suffered from migraine, years later I discovered this was owning to food allergies, my wife has taught me to note the reaction of my digestive system to food stuffs and eat accordingly, happily this along with the invention of ibuprofen has meant I have only three severe attacks in the last 20 years.
Well, everyone is free to do so. I'm also free to choose not. There are days when I don't eat meat but it's very random. It has more to do with what I fancy eating at the moment than anything else.
"Murder" is a legal term which (unlike abuse) does not (yet) apply to animals. It is also used by 'anti-abortion' folks to try to "stir emotions.
Humans are animals...
@Cutiebeauty . . . ok, does not apply to non-human animals -- to be more specific for those who need/want that, in this case.
