One major function is to make it harder for casual trolls to browse other members, or for political entities to post their bullshit, as per FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
As one progresses up the levels, ones restrictions are reduced.

Levels are there mostly to encourage participation on the site. Also, you have to reach level 5 befoe your posts don't have to be approved. That discourages the haters.

Best not to think about the levels and just contribute at your own rate. It is the sort of site where people come and go and sometimes spend more time than others. The points and levels will turn up by themselves.

I thought so at first but it does keep out spammers. You can get to level 5 or 6 rather quickly but gotta be a power user to get any higher LOL
