Does anyone here also enjoy a dark sense of humor? It oft crosses my mind that folks seem to get offended and upset by some of the more darker sides of my humor.. Which I understand but let me pose a thought.
MLK once said that you can not drive out the dark with dark.. Only with light. For some thats sparkles, sunshine and rainbows while for others that means making jokes about terrible things.. Whether that be 9/11, the holocaust or some even like a giggle about the spainish inquisition.
What are y'alls thoughts?
I have two dogs who I love with all my heart and would never harm.....BUT the funniest thing in the world to me are animal cruely jokes, so long as they are done in asureal and cartoonish fashion.
Such as Kenny Everett doing the spoof quiz show "Shoot the dog" in which animal loving contestents are offered ever larger and larger sums of money to blow the head off a puppy with a 12 bore shot gun.
Dark humor. That's when the power fails and you have to complete the gig in order to get paid, right?
The most humorous things are those that are 'sacred' to the majority, because that is where one finds the material in abundance. It is also what shocks them into laughing out of embarrassment or anger at how ridiculous it all is, even though they are resisting with all their might. Sex jokes. Political jokes. Gay jokes. Religious jokes. All sacred areas. All fodder for the comedian's canons. All dark closets with filaments of lies festooned from the ceiling and skeletons reclining in the corners.
For me it’s all about intent. Humor that’s meant to entertain, to bring laughter, to get us to take a second look at whatever the author thinks is troubling, whether I like it or not, is still productive. It’s humor that’s meant to bring harm and to cause pain... that’s what bothers me. And it’s a fine line... one that isn’t easily explained, but that’s a different conversation.
I have a very dark and twisted sense of humor and I love it. As for driving out the dark with the dark, sure you can. Same with cookies. You eat one cookie and swallow but a little bit of the cookie doesn't go down so now you need to eat another cookie to drive down the first cookie but then a viscous cycle begins and you need a third cookie...
I am definitely pretty dark but I try to keep my dark take on things confined to my life. For example, I might joke about my husband being in a box (he is dead and his ashes are in a box) but I try not to about other people’s dead family members. I read a lot of dark books about the plague and burial customs. I am sure that bothers others - that is not my problem. I just try and be considerate and not inflict my darkness or increase other people’s pain.
Love your name. Just cheesy enough...
I have a dark sense of humor. I love it. I find the darkest things to be funny.
Lots of good responses - case in point - Kathy Griffiths severed bloody trump head. I LOVED IT!
Totally over the top, even Bill Maher commented it might be a bit over the top.
The circus we have going in WA DC MUST be called out - continuously and loudly.
Religion and everything else has to play catch up. IMO
That and puns. A really funny series is Mock the Week on youtube and of course Mrs. Browns's Boys.
I was a 911 dispatcher for 20 years. I've worked in hospitals as a CNA and hung out with responders....my sense of humor is black as the night....
I worked as a civilian in a cop shop. Cops are really dark. Guess it's how they handle the job. My favorite was them talking about looking for someone to tell them their mother died. The guy was in a bar, so they wanted to go in and say, "everybody with a mother-leave. Not you, you get to stay!"
@RonWilliam53 that's terrible...lol
@Freespirit64 -- Short stint as an orderly at the old LA General. Hear the siren and take bets on what's coming in.
Dark humor here too. Frequently inappropriate. Try memes r us. We're basically all like that.
Yes. It's a wonderful thing....
I am incredibly dark.. However I don't let it off in certain circles as they would spit their false teeth across the room before feinting. I have learned to curb it.. I am always me. I try to consider others too. Best to just be around people who accept you as you are. Who know you are lovely and mean no harm.
So the local news was talking about someone shot a minature horse last night dead and the owners are extremely upset, understandably. I want to torture the person who did it.
At the same time all I could think about was the song "bye bye Lil Sebastian" from parks and recreation and I kept cracking up.
When I had cancer, I joked about death all the time. I very much have a dark sense of humor. Even macabre. Everyone says I'm funny but people in past relationships got tired of it.
Ms.Sherry I'm right there with ya..All the terrible things I've gone through I've always cracked jokes about them..I won't go into detail(for lack of strong alcoholic drink) but even the worst parts of my life it's my way of coping in a sense.
Depends. I don't like gore, graphic sex, jokes about body parts, and other gross skatalogical stuff that so many cis, hetero men seem to like.
If a stand-up comedian on Netflix starts talking about his genitals, or child rape, for instance, I not only change to a different comedian, but remember to skip him from then on. If I'm that way, and others feel the same, men who like dark humor might be running off potential women prospects.
