A longtime Bird admirer, if inspired by my Great-aunts.. I no longer feed them. Once having kept 4 roofed trough-feeders full, purchasing multiple 50 pound bags of sunflower & white millet, thistle seed & suet, too ... the pending sale of that homestead had me weaning birds I’d fed for over 30 years
In a new magic land ~ I’ve scrubbed and filled a ‘Birdbath’ daily for 5 years now - and they love it! Most find food in their surroundings -- but consistent, fresh water is a draw, and a necessity…
After the purchase & placement of a concrete birdbath, as well as flipping it’s bowl over to keep it from cracking in winter ..and some occasional leveling ... they’re cheap & easy to care for. In my first 10 minutes here on the porch - I’ve watched Grackles, Thrashers, Robins, Goldfinches, Sparrows, Bluebirds, Mockingbird (my favorite), and a Flycatcher take baths and drink!
Granted, up here we’ve entered the Month of Bird ..for which I’d also watched a Flicker, finches and doves this morning… And - the ‘bath wars’ are great -- just watched a robin chase off a Starling. Cheap & worthwhile entertainment
Here in Wisconsin the orioles have arrived along with the catbirds. Grape jelly is the most popular energy replacement food. Rufus sided towhee & white crowned sparrows passing thru. Such a rush is the spring migration.
The best we could do out West was the Bullock’s Oriole, and rare.. I’ve only seen a couple Baltimore Orioles here on the Blue Ridge of VA. Wish I’d see more! Seems every location has a Bully-bird; out West, it was a pack of Stellar Jays… Over here, it’s a pair of Mockingbirds.. They appear to drive away both Cardinals & Oriole’s (damnit).
Just moved into a new place and we've got quail in our front yard. Only birds I feed are hummingbirds, no takers on the feeder yet.
I’ve a sister who’d get Quail, lots of them! I never have.. But Hummingbirds … nearly contacted a local TV news crew to film the action at our place in the woods. 7 feeders, going through a half gallon of juice a day! Over east, it’s so warm & humid, their juice (4 to 1 water & sugar) quickly goes rancid, then molds. I’ve a large box of HB feeders just gathering dust
My mother wanted to try a bird bath, so she got one and placed it in the garden. Sadly for her the birds did not show any interest in it at all. Which was odd, because you could often hear dozens of happy birds splashing and showering in the village stream, just twenty feet away. LOL
