I use Google Photos, and today I'm seriously rethinking that option. In my email, I received an advert to use their new service of making a video. The way they proposed the service to me This wasn't some slick compilation of random photos either.

Now I realize that all of the social media, including Google, Instagram, Twitter, and Microsoft have a digital record of absolutely everything you ever put online but this was a little much for me seeing as it wasn't random photos cobbled together; and then sent to me as an enticement. Your thoughts?

You did not know that evrything, words, pix, everything, is forever out there?

I knew in a vague sense, but it hadn't been brought home to me so acutely. It is something or at least to me at the time, known but not really attended to; but is now.
I always have backups on externals and really only used it for basic graphics more than photos, but yes, I was lazy and shortsighted.

It's all in the fine print.....where it says Big Brother is thinking for you.

I don't post photos of my artwork anymore.
I'm careful with photos of family and friends.

After that I'm ok if they steal stuff. But yeah it's a creepy world out there.

I had that happen once in one of my graphics classes in 2000 when an instructor emailed me about some of my work being modified and resubmitted. She asked if that was my original work, which it was. Later I received an email from admin. apologizing and saying the student had copied others too and been expelled. They instituted new procedures and life went on.
However, I always wondered, why pay for something and then cheat? What did the person receive out of it other than loss of a lot of money and expulsion? What was the point?

@Angelface Watermarks sound like a good idea!

@RavenCT I had them. They can be tampered with electronically even more so than back in 2000.

I still remember reading about the woman who came upon a picture of her son in a private adoption advert. His photo had been lifted from her Facebook page; as were the images of other children. This event was years ago, but I imagine it was quite a shock.

@Angelface Yes this is the thing that worries me the most. That's just horrifying.

And yes I figured an easy watermark would not be easily removed. (Sigh).

Maybe, you could try it out and remove yourself, if it turns out not to your liking! But, be sure that you can easily cancel, as I hate having to jump through 'hoops,' to cancel anything!

Yeah, that was no random occurence. Did you have any other options in mind regarding photo editors etc? Or are you in need of privacy focused apps to minimize spying?

There is no real privacy. Microsoft, Apple, Google, Social Network Sites, every primary site saves every digital footprint that was ever made. That's a given, and I don't dispute that. I was however not expecting it to be so casually in your face. How many would even question anymore?
The small video was handcrafted and titled with a series of my photos compiled from different years into a single narrative of the same subject. I have no idea but suspect it was done with a smart app.
I have both cloud and private external drive so I will be thinking about this some more.
On a postscript, how many folks do you know who shell out a hundred or so for a good external drive and then leave it plugged into their computer?

@Angelface Not many in regards to the last question you asked. I get the privacy part, I'm in the process of learning certain skill sets in the field of cyber security, and am well aware of the spy state. Still, there are measures one could take to make things difficult for spies and malicious hackers, which was why I had asked.

I always suspected this. ihavent saved any photos to the cloud or where ever and have always assumed anything on the net will be forever accessible. Most of my FB accoutn is sharing purty or amazing photos from somewhere else
