This is known as one of medicine’s most incredible moments.
In 1922, at the University of Toronto, scientists went to a hospital ward with children who were comatose and dying from diabetic keto-acidosis. Imagine a room full of parents sitting at the bedside waiting for the inevitable death of their child. The scientists went from bed to bed and injected the children with the new purified extract - insulin. As they began to inject the last comatose child, the first child injected began to awaken. One by one, all of the children awoke from their diabetic comas. A room of death and gloom, became a place of joy and hope. Thank You Dr. Banting and Dr. Best!
In the last 43 years that I've worked in hospital pharmacy I've seen so many advances that have saved so many lives and allowed so many people to live normal lives that would have otherwise died just a few years before. I hope to live long enough to see what the next 40 years produce.
Someone fancies ya. #Kayla24 LOL!
Oh, she disappeared!
The great medical discoveries that allowed people to live a relatively normal life, a friend from my childhood nearly died from Type 1, glad that she was able to get treatment and live her life.
I know an 80 yo type 1. She's still going.
And today, it is so damn expensive, doctors prescribe Metformin, instead...which causes at least as much illness as it "helps".
My brother and I had a major falling out with a stupid L plate doctor at the hospital when I found a research paper about metformin and degenerative decline which she refused to even read. She told me you can find anything on google, I pointed out that the researchers had better PHd than her and to stop being so ignorant. Did not go down well. We got Dad off it and he went from a zombie in a bed unable to feed himself to walking around the wards with us. (in days) she still refused to believe it was the metformin. Thankfully the next time in hospital a Dr did listen and he was written up as allergic to it. Did not stop little miss know it all from giving him a dose when his blood sugar spiked (they were giving him fruit based drinks and high energy foods) he thought it was 1920 and he was in a bunker, my brother went ballistic and demanded to see the incompetent Dr who had poisoned our father. While it works beautifully for some it did not for my father. Diet worked better for him.
In this case, what the vaccine had on its side is that it was already clear these kids were dying and there was no other hope, so trying the vaccine had no risk or downside. With the Covid vaccine, the opponents still have their arguments that death is not certain with Covid, at least in most cases, and that the unknowns of the vaccine make it risky. So the current situation and this old situation with a different illness are apples and oranges...
They are actually as different as apples and ardvarks. Insulin is not a vaccine...
@Silver1wun A technicality. I am saying the medical situations are different in the circumstances, not saying the medicines are at all the same.
The OP is about celebrating the research and inventiveness of the people who helped to save the children. Not everything is about Covid 19 and the vaccines.
@TomMcGiverin They appear the same because unlike the case for insulin, we have a number of successful modalities available for fighting off this epidemic besides vaccines. The vaccine pushers are literally that; pushers of information and censorship controlling what the public is allowed to know and is allowed to DO. The latter being their motivation.
The state of Florida, for example, has a new surgeon general who is driving establishment propagandists mad. He's 'spilling the beans' and they are helpless to do anything but call him names; carefully I might add, because of his race.
fast-forward to 2020, a vial of insulin is now roughly equal to a week's pay...
notice how no one ever has to pay, in commercials?
How is that justified? The manufacturers still paying huge royalties to the university of Toronto? Did they get anything? 100 years on and copyright still paid? Insulin is a natural product. How can it be patented?
Unfortunately when you allow profit to drive medical help that is what happens.
Get a National Health service!
@Mcflewster we have.
@FrayedBear Glad you are happy with it. An Aussi ?? am I right?
@Mcflewster living here.
And people are cutting their dosage so that they can afford it.
Yes... lifesaving discovery and healing breakthrough.
Who could any deny children life....
Examples like this could be used in defense of covid vaccine.
Miracle treatment (not cure) for type I diabetics. Unfortunately, often used for type II which makes things worse.
Type 2 diabetics are not normally prone to DKA -

It seems that the usual advice of constantly eating small amounts to keep blood sugar level down may be contrary to good health in that it does not allow the pancreas time to recover\ heal as it has to constantly work trying to produce effective insulin & other chemicals.
