The Amish community has very nice people. I live in an area of Pennsylvania that has some Amish. I was at the Lurgan Greenhouse today and told a joke to the young Amish lady at the checkout and I got her to laugh. I told her the joke "I once dated a woman with a lazy eye and I broke up with her because she was seeing someone on the side" I had never seen an Amish person laugh before and they are usually very serious. It was nice to see her laugh. They are just regular people, you just need to know how to get them to loosen up.
I worked at a long term care home in Mound Ridge, Kansas that was owned by Mennonites. I have to say it was the best place I ever worked. The kindness shown to employees, religious or not, restored my faith in humanity more than once. The Mennonite women brought the most amazing warm cinnamon rolls every Thursday. Fresh ones provided for each shift..yummm
I remember a beautiful spring day riding out to Amish country in Pennsylvania. It was a different world. The air smelled so pure. It was wonderful. I hated to leave this oasis.
Everything has some beauty!
Really?!
I'm sure you've heard of their JerrySpringa, I mean rumspringa where they leave the community & get all 'wild' b4 making the choice to return to the 'life'.
Their lifestyle choice is interesting and they ARE pretty cool. There are communities in WI that are fun to visit. One family gave me a tour of their home and gave me a hand canned jar of their own garden green beans❣
Most of the younger Amish people seem pretty damn socially aware nowadays.
Anytime you can get a female to laugh is a winning moment!
I consider them human beings like anybody else, different lifestyle and faith but so what? They sre not aliens from another planet.
Some of my Amish friends in Northern Wisconsin farm with horses, have very nice, plain homes, and I have gotten several quilts from them. I love their big drafts, and how gentle they are. They were friendly and did laugh at jokes. They were nice folks. The only problem I have with them is the way they treat their horses, and the have puppy mills. My friends didn't but a lot do. I can't respect animal cruelty. I have a gypsy/fjord cross that was rescued from the meat truck. It has taken me a year to gain his trust. No respect for non human animals.
I find most people can be 'set free,'...at least for a moment!
I used to regularly interact with the Amish while doing mobile phone sales in south central PA. I don't understand why people think that just because they live differently that they are some kind of an oddity.
My biggest gripe with the Amish is the fact that their method of transportation causes issues on the roads.
As long as we're telling jokes here's one of my favorites.
"Did you hear about the unfaithful Amish woman?"
"She was seeing 2 mennonite!"
Coming from a Mennonite father ( they were first, Amish were an offshoot) I can tell you they are just like anyone else but there is also a dark side as they keep troubles within the district and deal with them in Church. Unfortunately there is a lot of domestic abuse and child abuse, incest and rape going on that RARELY gets reported to the English law enforecement. One Amish man did recently get arrested for sexually molesting young girls, ( the younger generations are less willing to put up with this code of silence so that is a good change.)
have you watched the film KINGPIN?
There is a rapidly growing Amish population here in Central Pennsylvania. They're not as different from us as you'd think. When you see a bunch of kids playing baseball with music blaring from a portable stereo on a nearby bench, you wouldn't realize that they are Amish if not for the entirely inappropriate "uniforms."
They do work damned hard because of lifestyle they've chosen, but they love their leisure time too. I've often run across groups of Amish men out fishing.
I live in south central Pa and they don't listen to music in my area. They have a one room schoolhouse not far from the greenhouse. They use bicycles for transportation most of the time. All the men and boys wear hats with long sleeved shirts and pants. All the women wear their hair up in a bonnet and dresses with long sleeves. While working in the greenhouse some women wear pants under their dresses. The owners name is Elmer, sons: Emanuel, Sam, and Reuben. Their prices are the best around. We get all of our plants there.

I lived near many in New York state.
Some were very nice people.
The kind of neighbors you like to have out in the remote.

Whiskey and cocaine usually works, if not, try LSD, they love it.
Ew, pressure wash me!
