Does anyone else tire of hyper-intellectual posts about belief and faith (or lack thereof)?
Sometimes things can and should be said simply. Or at least, that's what I think.
As someone who is generally incapable of being concise, I happen to agree that simple is often better. For example I would never read comments as encyclopedic as mine.
I don’t think I've seen what I would describe as hyper intellectual and I’ve mostly enjoyed the posts on said topics.
There is a place for both. Philosophy can become mental masturbation and pointless navel-gazing -- particularly when you get into formal logic and postmodernism and so on. But particularly if you're not religious, you need philosophy to provide the underpinning of your morality and ethics and your theory of how you acquire knowledge and tell what's "real" and so forth -- so you can discover those things for yourself that religion wants to spoon-feed you all the time.
On the other hand sometimes you just want to shoot the breeze and not think hard. And that's fine, too.
"Ce que l'on conçoit bien s'énonce clairement,
Et les mots pour le dire arrivent aisément."
(Nicolas Boileau)
Mais oui!
Um... so... you want people to not be themselves to suit others? How is that right? There are posts that go above my head but I don't bother worrying about it. I think I'd much rather see that then posts that avoid at least trying to use decent grammar, language and spelling. Those are far more headache inducing to me.
Did you realize that you are not obliged to read every post, let alone comment on it?
I am under the impression the entire point of this site is to allow people to discuss these things at whatever depth and length they prefer. A lot of very intelligent people are on this site, and intelligent people like to discuss things. And an intellectual discussion kind of requires a certain level of due diligence: defining terms, citing sources, backing up claims and statements, and yes, getting into the deep psychological, anthropological, and philosophical points and counterpoints relating to the subject at hand. I cannot help but feel that this post is a call for dumbing down, which is directly counter to this site's intended purpose as I understand it.
The problem is that putting things into simple terms isn’t always easy, especially when the ideas themselves are complex. I’d be hard pressed to explain quantum mechanics to any meaningful extent without using terms like orthonormal states and eigenvalues since these are fundamental mathematical ideas that are used to do quantum mechanical calculations. When it’s possible to, then sure fair enough but rarely is reality so nice and elegant.
I agree! Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how direct it is because someone, somehow, will always find a way to be "offended". It's sad that we live in a world where you have to watch every single thing you say & people make mountains out on ant hills
That's all very true but I'm trying to decide if I am offended by that. Oh, well!
@DenoPenno hahahahaha I see what you did there! LOL
