Twenty six churches to be closed in my home patch. Things are looking up but what to do with those redundant buildings. Some may be converted to dwellings houses or community centres but the others are totally unsuitable and will probably just be left to decay and fall apart.
What a shame that the money used to build them all those years ago wasn't put to better use.

I'd love to see these old churches converted into concert venues. At least that would be enjoyable and would make the towns some money.

Oran Mor in Glasgow is a good example of a church being put to better use. My son had his wedding reception there. Brilliant place.

@Moravian Looks like a fabulous place. Good usage of the building.

Often their acoustics as lecture, concert, or meeting halls works.

Since they don't pay property taxes, Churches add nothing to the city or county coffers. Rejoice in their demise!

Whatever your city does, I hope they don't let crumbling buildings blight their neighborhoods.

Every old church than cannot be converted to another use should be razed to the ground before it becomes an attractive nuisance. Then, if no other plan is in the immediate offing, the land can be used, at least temporarily, for a community garden, or a park, or a baseball or soccer field.

That's happening in my area to small churches. Many are made of brick and are well constructed so people buy them and turn them into nice homes.

Interesting as here most of the population is agnostic or none. However, we do have 3 churches and one is often used for secular gatherings. It has a large meeting room complete with a commercial kitchen. Here we are having a major problem with affordable housing and right now a three bedroom, two car garage is being finished behind the church for a new pastor. Seems there would be a much better use of money than to support the 'superstitious' among us.

Churches do not bother me unless they are being used to praise an invisible being for leaving you dependent on him. Convert them to a house or a shelter of some kind. Just leave the religious names out of it.

There is a delightful restaurant about 4 miles away that is called "La Capilla". (The chapel.)
It has retained most of the religious decor, and large parties can even dine on the raised dais where the altar once stood.

Hallelujah, praise the lord for this meal!!!!! 😋

In the town where my cousin lives, Mocanaqua PA, they converted on of theirs into a pizza palace. Called it "Slice of Heaven"!

I used to go to a great Mexican restaurant in Denver in a former church. That was a while ago. First time I had posole. I forget the name, but I think it was on Vallejo Street in northwest Denver.

Some have very tall inside walls and make excellent climbing gyms.

Yes, I know of at least one in Edinburgh that is used for this.

Bars and brothels are great uses for ex-churches.

You're a wicked man! ((Hugs))

@anglophone Maybe, but am I wrong?

With the rise of secular weddings and celebrations, maybe some of them could be converted into secular event spaces. Weddings, funerals, celebrations of life need a setup similar to a church layout. Just replace the religious symbols with nature scenes and floral displays, etc. Bows on the edge of the pews, or replace them with more comfortable chairs, voila! A wedding venue, which could command some prime site rental fees! 🙂

I don't think there is a church that can't be converted into a home, it is almost a tradition in the UK. If you can get your hands on an old disused church, and convert, you are seen as being at the hight of property fashion.

I don't think I could rest easily in a former church, feeling a bit uneasy in church settings myself, but I'm sure there are many who could!

Yes ,quite a few have, but I know of a few that are empty and falling into
disrepair. There is one in Inverness that featured inthe Outlander TV series. I think that one would be in demand.

The photo is of St Laurence church in Forres where I went to school. I remember being marched along the high street every Christmas for a service where my mates and I played cards during the service. I hate to think what would have happened to us if we were caught.
I don't think this building would lend itself to conversion to a dwelling house .

My wife and I nearly bought one such with that intention. I have also seen it done, though the three pointed windows at one end of the first floor has an unfortunate resemblance to male genitalia!

Imagine what Halloween fun you could have if your converted church comes with a graveyard full of old tombsones 😂😂😂

@Flyingsaucesir Sadly they usually wait until there are no living relatives left, the churches having been closed a while, and cremation having been the main custom in this country for a long time, then they move the grave stones to one side.

@Fernapple Alas, it is a pitiful waste of harum scarum! 😂
