Tilting my head down to read us causing neck/back soreness.
I looked into buying some ridiculous contraptions designed to hold a book at eye level.
I really don’t want to buy a contraption.
Would you mind sharing your most body-comfortable book-reading position—especially if it avoids neck bending?
Here are contraptions you might like.
How about a simple bookholder atop a lightweight plant stand?
Laying face down on a bed with my chest and arms propped up by 2 firm king pillows and my feet laying off the bed. Book is flat on the mattress and I use glasses to focus correctly for reading. Same for kindle but no glasses needed.
Good one! I’ll try this! Thanks.
'Ave you tried stapling the reading material to your forehead, Mr. Gumby?
I use a squishy pillow on my lap; I can adjust the Kindle and it doesn’t slide. I lean back on an assortment of pillows to keep from straining my neck/upper back(fibromyalgia: also why I use a Kindle. Light/thin/adjustable lighting and font.)
This approximates my current reading rig. Because of vision issues, the book has to be within a foot of my face; because of neck, it has to be as tall as my eyes...
In ancient days, I’d have been euthanized by my community. Yet, here I am, like a bug in its back, under a mountain of frilly accouterments, readin’ mah damn book.
@DinnerandaMovie That was hysterical to read!
Agree with a music stand.
Adjustable, made to hold a book.
And leaves your hands free.
Well, the older we get...etc...etc..etc... so from my own experience, it does hurt a little bit to hold a book in place for longer times now and makes the pleasant experience of reading more like a difficult chore. So I did built my own book stand that I can place on any table or desk and then holds the open book at the right page with small arms made of hanger's wire. Pretty cheap and easy to build. I have also placed a parking place for a yellow highlighter and a pen, so they are handy at all times. I love it. If that helps me to keep enjoying reading then I have no problem with it
Crafty McGyver!
@DinnerandaMovie ha ha ha...thx, and I didn't even specify my fixture is made of thick carton box and duct tape !! Really cheap !! (BTW.. McGyver is a very nice compliment !!!)
@IamNobody I always assume duct tape... ??
@DinnerandaMovie ..... I know, sounds shady to say the least but...still true, there is plenty of opportunity for good use of duct tape. ???
A friend of mine recommends these. I haven't tried them yet myself. [amazon.com]
It depends on what you read your books on, a chair; couch; bed; etc..
To be honest it's much like keeping a good posture for lower back pain, now that you're aware of it you'll stop doing it...mostly.
Though to answer your question, I usually read on a recline chair (or an Adirondack chair for outdoors) and try to rest my arms on the arm-rests more on the elbows, than the forearms.
However if you're looking for a not so crazy contraption, you could try a music stand. A couple of clothes pins for stubborn pages (and some back ups) to boot.
Google search one of these (Quik Lok Heavy-Duty Orchestra Sheet Music Stand) if you have heavier books. Hope that helped
In the recliner, I’d have to hold my book way up to avoid bending my neck. Putting a couple of pillows in my lap and resting the book on it alleviates the problem, but I feel silly.
I’ll try those glasses!
