At what age do you start to feel "old"? My birthday is in a month and I'm dreading it already. I just keep creeping closer to 50.

50 was a shock, but mostly because I wasn't expecting it, and my wife was very sick and getting worse. I make jokes about being old, but I don't actually feel old, now that I am in my 60s.

in body, or mind?

I have some health issues, and although I joke about being 'old', I know that 45 is not old. Of course, I could easily slide into a Monty-Python based diatribe at this point - but that actually proves my other point.

Still sharp in the mind; even moreso with age than when I was 'young'.

It's not about being old, young, etc... It's about living the best life you can, day to day.

In the end, it's all you really have, isn't it?

54, I can see the road downhill from here....

Well, I'm 53. Old doesn't happen in this decade.

I agree. Anyone who is a mere twenty years older than myself certainly is not old.

@SpikeTalon why, thank you!

I'm there with you, fast approaching 50... Sometimes I feel old already, arthritis starting in, but, when you keep the joints moving, somehow they stay lubricated, and keep moving. When there's pain, power through it... When you start feeling foggy, challenge yourself. Keep moving, and learning, and you can keep feeling young. That's my two cents worth.

When you look old.... I wish I was 40 again.

If only we could appreciate the age we're at instead of constantly looking backwards.

37 because your birthday cake takes two boxes of candles.

You can’t stop or turn back time but you can feel younger by exercising regularly and keeping as fit as possible!

I have always heard that being old was 20 years older than your age (whatever that age may be). Now "feeling" old is a different story. Age is not the problem, it is the complications that accompany it. For me, I started feeling old when I turned 70 and it has been a steady progression from then on. Your mileage may vary. When I was your age I was still on top of the world and could do anything.

I'm 72. Was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at 21, but it's only really started to limit me in the past 10 years...two hip replacements, two rotator cuff surgeries, two carpal tunnel surgeries, and a reverse total shoulder replacement...so I can't physically do all the things I'd like to do, but that doesn't make me feel old. I've lived with pain most of my life, but the only time I feel old is when the pain is so severe that I can’t think about anything except how much it hurts, but that doesn't happen very often. Thank goodness for medical marijuana, pain management drugs, and skilled surgeons. I retired two years ago and am happier than I've been for years, volunteering as a tutor, enjoying life, and laughing with friends. Don’t worry. Be happy!

I think it depends on your definition of "old". For me, "old" is not a feeling as much as a frame of mind. My body has changed, that is a fact of age. It takes my body longer to complete three miles on the eliptical or walk around my neighborhood, hike that trail, those are facts of age. The way I feel is driven by how well I take care of my body, what I eat, how I sleep, etc. When I am paying attention to what my body needs (and I don't always get that right), I don't feel "old" at all. When I don't listen to what my body needs regarding food, exercise, rest, I feel OLD.

I reached 65 years of age in March, 2018.

I'm 36 don't feel it, still feel like I'm 20. I'm still able to do daring moves maybe a little more cautious that I used to be. What makes me feel old in a different way is explaining things like what a pager was to these 19-20 year old people I work with. Just recently I had to explain how 1-900 numbers were a thing before the internet came about.

My body quit working (reliably) in my early 20s, so...

I really started feeling old at 60, when wrinkles became obvious, my hair was not only going white but getting thinner, and I realized my knees were never going to get any better without surgery. I miss being able to bounce back.

I remember when I was around 10, I swore to myself that when I reached 40 I was going to kill myself. I just didn't want to be old.

The closer I got to 40, the less old it seemed. Now I'm almost 60 and have no plans to off myself.

Age is just a number.

depends on your physical state -- if a manual laborer - you are old at 55 and you may be able to crawl to 65. If an office worker or such - 60 isn't a big deal - espc. w/ checkups, eating right, not smoking, moderate drinking (yeah, I know why bother if that's the cure?).

Aging is most acutely felt in sexual activity - for guys - get a budget line for Viagra if you have a woman. And -- if you are single and can't get it up w/o Viagra and don't want to spend the money or take pills - don't waste the womans time - especially stop thinking of that sweet young thing!

Some guys are out there making babies at 70 - many of us started with "problems" in our mid to late 50's - (the viagra website details the percentage of males w/ ED as a function of age - sure some lucky dudes out there!)

Viagra is fine for true dysfunction, for some men. It doesn’t create youthful, spontaneous erections or fix lack of desire. In straight couples, far important than an erection is a man’s attention to his partner’s pleasure. Nearly 75% of women need direct stimulation of the clitoris to reach orgasm. And each woman differs in the kind of stimulation she needs. A guy who is attentive to that doesn’t have to worry about Viagra.

I do a physical job and at 50 i feel great, the work keeps me in good shape and exercise promotes new brain cells.win and win

@UUNJ yep, the days of spontaneous over the back of the couch sex are inhibited - even w/ Viagra. The point of Viagra is that one gets the ability for penetrative sex again. Yeah, it takes a bit of romance and cuddling/holding etc. (by both parties) - but it beats the alternative.

Awww .... turning 50.... bummer!

1

I'll be 49 in a month, I still don't feel old! I guess I am in denial! Lol

1

You are still a kid! LOL. I dreaded 40 but that passed and I knew how cool I was. I think a lot has to do with where you are with your life. If you are happy and content your age won't matter.

1

50!!! you bees old.

1

It's just a number. Take care of yourself, make time for you.

"Creeping closer to 50" means you're still here with us. I turn 70 this year and I'm throwing myself a huge, decadent party. Physically I can't do the things I used to -- or even the things i want to, but severe arthritis runs in the family. I had one knee replaced and they've had to go back in three times. No more. I always hated exercise anyway. But I can still dance and can continue going on reinventing myself. This week it's a blue streak in my hair and lots of eye makeup. For a while it was tattoos. Who knows how much trouble I'll be able to get into as time goes by? If you're aging it means you're still on the carousel for another ride.

1

I'm 52 and the answer is 50.

@PraiseXenu thats 100% the way I see it.

"Youth is wasted on the wrong people"
.
Bonus point if you know where that quote is from.

Originally maybe.
That's an exact quote from a film I'm sure many have seen. Many times.
