I have a theory. I've read lots of philosophy. I know there's a debate about whether or not human beings are selfish creatures. I think we absolutely are, when it comes to "basic" needs. I think the definition of basic depends on the time period and the person's social group.

But I think there is a drive in people that can circumvent that. I think humans crave justice. I don't know why. Anthropologically it doesn't seem to have such a huge significance, but I see it all the time, throughout history. When we feel a sense of injustice, we tend to react strongly. The MeToo movement, the 99% movement, Black Lives Matter, and that's just recent history.

Personally, there's few things that move me to the level of anger that might encourage a physical response as injustice. I hate bullies. Wanting to punch someone in the face almost always involves bullies for me. Perhaps I am an insane idealist or optimist, but I think working to irradicate injustice is the greatest pursuit. In my fantasy world, we are all free to find happiness on our own terms; we are rewarded for our efforts fairly; and bullies are severely punished.

Does anyone else feel injustice is a motivating force, or am I just delusional?

I think humanity is a paradox. We're capable of great empathy and kindness as well as great violence and brutality. I'm reminded of this Native American legend: [virtuesforlife.com]

I was not bullied and I did not bullied others but I always felt enraged strongly when its happend around me. Yes I was felt that needs of phisical reaction towards bullies (punch them in the face) but sometimes felt that, what if you are in the position to have enough power over the bullies and give a taste of their own medicine? This makes me think, I am a bullie as them if I do it? Can we apply rightfully theeye for an eye`methode in those cases?

Nobody sees himself as the bad guy, not even the evil one. Adolph Hitler and those who supported him felt they were doing God's work. Somehow, a great many Americans find justice in deporting a teen who has been raised here as an American but brought as in infant without papers. We don't see injustice in ourselves or in our like minded cohorts. When we do feel vague discomfort, when there is cognitive dissonance, we find justification for our actions. There are those without empathy who Bible-thump Ayn Rand to prove to themselves that they are "in the right".

The ruling class has a vested interest in peddling the myth that all humans are selfish.

The reality is the opposite. Most humans are not selfish, which explains why the human race has survived the way it has. This is often witnessed after a natural disaster. People pull together for the greater good.

It's also a fact the poorest usually donate the most to charity. I'd say those who label humanity 'selfish' are the selfish ones.

I have a neighbor who has a sign in their window:

JUSTICE IS WHAT LOVE LOOKS LIKE IN PUBLIC

I often reflect that this sign will mean entirely different things to different people. To a conservative, "justice" is punishment of evildoers (effectively, penalizing people who don't agree with you). To a liberal, "justice" is fairness. To a conservative, love is tough love; to a liberal it is kum-by-yah. So a conservative and a liberal would have entirely different mental images conjoured by this slogan. One would see a public flogging, the other an egalitarian society in which everyone is treated well.

To avoid this sort of hilarity, one needs to define terms and use them with precision.

Even your couching this in terms of INjustice rather than justice -- in abreacting to the absence of justice rather than seeking it in the first place -- frames the discussion in a certain way.

I would agree with you that everyone wants comprehensibility, fairness and social reciprocity -- if that's what you meant 😉

I understand what your saying but from my understanding of society now both conservatives and lyberals would want to see public floggings. We live in a f up world where both sides of the same coin want each other dead and the guy holding the coin keeps them spinning around instead of going after him.

@Dfox Yes it is hyper-polarized and I fear that it's going to have to play out in some way that's at least partly dystopian before some general understanding that we're all human and all in this together reasserts itself. From where I sit, 90% of the GOP and 66% of the Democratic Party are cynically spinning that coin. And much of what's left is in disarray, engaging in internecine warfare and other energy-sapping activities.

@mordant I think the far left and far right just need to stop running everything and we need more middle of the road politician cuz you know MOST OF US ARE IN THE MIDDLE!

Yes the Selfish Gene.. human nature. IMO a good definition of a human being is a person who is able to override and control their baser natural instincts...such as rage..lust..temptation..violence etc

Except those same instincts often are what define us and allow us to advance as a society.

@Dfox yes that would be true, to be able to marshal armies that can win wars..that can harness their primordial instincts to kill and win...and greed in business etc etc the point is we can be masters of our instincts.

Infants apparently have a sense of fairness and shrink from those that do not demonstrate it. Primates have "Rules General" for behavior. That a sense of reciprocity or fairness comes with the monkey suit is pretty clear, Judging my the number of persons that believe or wish to believe in Cosmic Accountancy (Karma).

Justice has alot to do with one's own morals.Selfeshiness sometimes has to do with survival.Ask the Dahmer party. Its a grey area to me.

Injustice is a motivating force IF (1) person is NOT a sociopath, (2) racism or ethnocentrism is NOT a basic part of the person's personality and surrounding culture.

Anything anyone ever does is selfish on some level.
. Combating injustice is a worthy pursuit.
Good luck with your endeavors.

In our somewhat upside-down world, justice has become rather subjective, and not everything many people believe are injustices, actually are.

Interesting. Like what?

@AuntieMame This is sure to ruffle some feathers, but "income inequality" would be one. This term is used in a manner to try and imply there is some conspiracy to suppress or even destroy the middle class. The people pushing this concept would have you believe CEOs of large corporations are all criminals and the accusers would love nothing more than to use this as justification for redistribution of wealth (stealing). IMO, this is nothing but socialism attempting to assert itself.
