In your opinion, what are the worst Bible verses?
Lot's daughters getting pregnant by making their father get drunk and having sex with him.
And don't forget Jonah surviving in the belly of a whale, blimey even Captain Ahab couldn't manage that and he was Captain of a Whaling ship, fictional of course just as the entire Goat-Herders Guide to the Galaxy is as well.
God commanding genocide, including the taking of slaves and raping women. Happens more than once.
Bible
There are so many. But lets try. Numbers 31: 17 and 18 on how to deal with none combatant prisoners after a battle.
"Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him."
"But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."
Too many instances of genocidal, homicidal, filicidal, uxoricidal commands and condoned behaviors to name!
The whole book is a crock of shit.
I also read the Satanic Bible by Anton Lavey and thought that was just as dumb but a little more funny.
I also thought some of those things while reading the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster by Bobby Henderson.
don't we often say the same stuff about other works we don't understand though? this is dunning-kruger at its finest i think. What is the Naive Dialectic? Would your pov of the Bible change if you could read in it, rather than the literal?
The whole damn bible is bad fiction.
And pure Trash.
@SeaRay215ex Yep and not enough Garbage Collections around to get rid of it.
After reading all these wicked, treacherous, disturbing, disgusting and despicable words - IT'S A BLOODY DIRTY BOOK AND THOSE THAT SLURP IT IN AS GOOD AND "HOLY" ARE MENTALLY DISEASED.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Why would anyone love this pathetic world and insomuch as to give their son and why would anyone want eternal live?
We just all want to hurry up and get this pathetic existance over with so we can be in non-existance with the non-existent flying spaghetti monster sky God once and for ever.
You also need to remember that 'Jesus' also said that he has only come for the lost tribe of Israel, never mind that they were actually Canaanites, and that that Saul/Paul guy had some debates with Peter on talking to those non jews.
@gsiamne The LORD Almighty will bless them, saying, "Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance." Isaiah 19:25
Jesus was Egyptian.
Peter was a Fisherman. Scholars I have heard of has said Fisherman were rather low or not educated. There are somethings peter may not very well understand as would Paul.
Judas betrays Jesus is fulfillment of old testiment written prophesy, but not by calling Judas's name. However, consider as if Jesus said, "Judas it is written I am to be betrayed for 30 peices of silver. in order to complete and fulfill the prophesies I need you to betray me".
Was he playing an unwilling role in this act? Does not Luke 22:3a state, “Then Satan entered Judas called Iscariot”? If Judas was possessed, was he responsible for this action? Perhaps the clearest indication that Judas felt differently about Jesus than the other disciples is how he addressed Jesus.

Saul of Tarsus/Paul was a Pharisee among the Pharisees, a member of the group that held to the strictest following of the Law of the Jewish faith.
Paul understood from having a high education of the written text. Paul had know of how what was written about in old testiment is what is purported to have happened.. John 1:1 gives a clue to understand: In the beginning (or let us say "to start" is the logos (thought-word-speach), the logos was with God and was God.
John 1:14 ... the logos became flesh(a person).
The biblical theme is: What old testiment people thought and talked about was spoken into reality.
@gsiamne. Some of the book of Acts accounts of "the way" would not be much like modern christianity of mega-church corporations.
Paul perhaps a sort of forerunner for spreading "the good news". It wasn't until around 300 A.D. that:
The persecution of Christians ended with the next emperor, Constantine, took power and Christianity started to transition to being the dominant religion in the Roman Empire. [medium.com]
I find many both appalling & hilarious.....pimping out Sarah (Twice!) to "kings" for grazing rights & "favor" is always charming......
I don't recall any versus that I thought of as worst.
However, I do recall the killing catalogs of men, women, children and livestock from competing tribes destroyed and listed as proof of the greatness of god. It was a part of what made me doubt much more than I was already and started me on my way to being atheist.
The Book of Job and Yahweh and Satin having a competition at the expense of a man's emotions. So, yes, Job lost his children.
Hey, and what about the bit where Sky Daddy Gawd has a bad hair day and decides to give that poor bastard Job the hardest, toughest time of his life then blames it ALL on Lucifer and some non-existent bet they had?
Or, sending a huge flood to wipe out everything just because he saw humans as his biggest ever fuck up even though, being so Omniscient he knew quite well it was going turn out that way in the first place?
Or, You have all sinned, you are ALL going to sin in the future SO, I'll have my son, who is me btw, executed as an atonement for the sins you will commit even though you haven't even born as yet to sin anyway.
Or, sending his 'Chosen' Peoples in to slavery in Egypt, which also never happened btw, for 400 years and waiting for some slave woman to give birth to child (there MUST have literally HUNDREDS of other babies born in that 400 years) having it sent into exile as a man, nearly dying in the desert, making it climb some obscure mountain, breathe in the of some burning bush (probably a Middle-Eastern variety of Marijuana or Opium Poppy) tells his to rescue HIS Chosen People from slavery but only gives him a big stick and the words, " tell them I am that i am sent you."
Yeah right on the mark Sky Daddy, at least our Aussie Aborigines had enough sense to turn a stick into a Boomerang and use that as both a hunting weapon and fighting weapons as well.
yes, so you are obv reading literally, iow you havent even started reading yet, wadr. Since that never happened, a diff point is being made, most likely, and those who just insist it did happen will miss it
Well hell, let's have some fun here, exactly which verse of the Bible are you talking about, are we including the old in the new testaments? So I'm going to go ahead and take into consideration the old and New testaments and basically all versions of the Bible, if it is in between the preface and the index there is the probably of a bad verse.
Leviticus 25:44-46
Explicitly condones slavery
3600 years after Judaism (1800 years after Christianity) we finally abolished slavery.
(The slavery abolition act 1833)
Took us quite a while to undo judeo-christian “values”
@Thirst2learn socialism - a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
Taxing "...means of production, distribution, and exchange..." is not giving THE WHOLE a part ownership.
American capitalism taxation slavery is about president making some $400,000 a year salary while "citizens " are only guaranteed minimum wage WITHOUT having a profitable share as a part of a whole.
It is not socialism, it is capitalism slavery.
@Thirst2learn I don't vote, and I do not file income tax
@Mvtt Ah but, in our own thoughts we are FREE are we not?
We, as Atheists/Agnostics ARE Free to think as we will, be as we wish, etc, etc, and in some cases, even stand up and be counted as being on the side of Logic, Reasoning and Truth over Superstition, Rituals, Misogyny, Brutality, Cruelty, etc, etc.
so, if people wrote the Bible, and not Yah--a premise im sure most would agree with--then it likely remains to understand why they wrote those vv (that are widely misinterpreted, imo), especially being as how we now know that none of those slaughters literally took place, and etc.
might not be as gratuitous, sorry for that, but it will be more revealing, i think
