Could be somehow related to awareness that atmospheric life energy manifests in swirling, spiraling action. Maybe symbolic, since ages of bodies were mixed. Arrangement conducive to continuation of life force in another realm?

Indeed. Spiral symbolism prominent across the globe I think. To take the symbolism of the spiral the straight line of male force combined with the circle of female, both in movement create the spiral and so creation.
That’s an amazing find. If they all died together I wonder was it disease or some form of ritual sacrifice. I understand that some meso-American cultures would sacrifice if the crop failed etc. and the sacrifice of a high ranking family would be an understandable offering. Just wondering.
