Ethiopia in Roman times: [edition.cnn.com]
Not long ago, one of our Kentucky contingency insisted that Africa and the New World gave little of value to the world short of diamonds and gold. He insisted that only civilizations were European, Egyptian and Chinese. Called him out, but could not convince. This article certainly illustrates my point. Very cool.
Also, it is thought that the Arc of the Covenent (if it ever really existed in the first place) was brought to Ethiopia and exists there today.
I tried to explain that maize (corn) was domesticated and evolved out on Mexico, Mayans were the first to vulcanized rubber, they gave us chilis, their ball courts served as an inspiration modern day basketball and American football. The Mayans also philosophize the "zero" place marker as a sign for nothingness. They had their hieroglyphic written language, etc.
According to many Roman writers of the time, the Roman Empire never tried to invade and conquer Ethiopia but instead set up a kind of 'Trade Agreement' with its ruling class/classes since the Ethiopian warriors were considered to be somewhat better than the Legions and far, far more numerous as well.
That's interesting info.

Posted by qpr81Trajan's column in Rome. Shame they put a pope on top of it. Even though this is a monument raised over a genocide it's still something worth seeing.
