LINK Insects are vanishing from our planet at an alarming rate. But there are ways to help them

Why would I help what urbanites recoil from? Because I am not an urbanite. Plant natives, not lawns.

I along with a friend, saw a strange thing yesterday. There were white insects in the air that seemed like they were collecting themselves into balls from which filaments were streaming. This was happening from a level of about twenty feet to as far up as we could see. We had to look towards the sun, from a shadow, to see the light reflecting through the insects and the filaments. This happened in Warrenton, Oregon, which is the next city across the bay from Astoria.

Many insects make silks in order to travel through the air, attach to act as bridges, even rise into the stratosphere. I would have enjoyed seeing that spectacle assuming they were not an invasive species scourge.
