My favorite North American spider, the black and yellow argiope (Argiope aurantia). Somewhere on my SD card is a neat picture of her unique web.

Down here they call them banana spiders. Years ago they were plentiful. I don't know if it has to do with the drought of more than a decade or what , but l haven't seen any in the last 2 or 3 years.

@Insectra I haven't seen that one before. It was the one above. I am in Texas. They have to put their own spin on everything.

These were the worst part of walkingin my grandmother's corn fields when it was high. The spiders were numerous and the webs were huge!

I nicknamed this beauty the "zipper" spider, because of that distinctive web !

she's a beaute! Is that the spider that weaves a zigzig section of her web. I always thought is was a way to increase the tension of the web, to make it taut.

@Insectra that would be such a cool trivia. I only hypothesize my explanation.

When I was still married, I lived in a small town in northern Pennsylvania. The small back deck and the outside basement door adjacent to it were constantly covered in thick webs with that unique zig-zag signature.

On a cool, sunny day; there would be a dozen or so spiders in view on those webs.

The detail on it's back is quite interesting. Should mean something, I know not what.

Very pretty markings. They tell me to give her space.
