Snake feeding can sometimes be interesting. No, you can’t eat the tongs, Xena.

Thanks for the input! I don't handle her for at least a day or two after she eats, and luckily, she's never regurged and has been a heathy, pretty girl (knock on wood).

Corns are great. I have 6 myself. They eat very well and are easy to feed.

A bit too overzealous ...

They tend to have poor aim.

Beautiful. What is she??

Leafhead Level 8 Dec 2, 2018

She’s a Brazilian rainbow boa. I also have a male named Thor. He’s a lot mellower.

@graceylou
Rainbow Boas are gorgeous in the light!
Pix do them little justice, but she's a handsome snake indeed 🙂
Do Xena and Thor breed?

@graceylou
I have lizards. I keep it small these days, but have kept Varanids and Iguanas in the past.

@Leafhead No I don't breed my animals. They grew up together as babies but were separated a long time ago. I have geckos also: 3 cresties, a panther gecko, and a Madagascar giant day gecko.

First pic is Xena in her heated tub (the log thing is huge but it has to be there or she wouldn't go in there). Second pic is Thor.

@graceylou
Thor is really colorful! Is it normal for males to out color females, or is it just lighting?
You have quite the herp collection there.
I've been eyeballing Cresties for a while, and other geckos like Viper Geckos. I'd like to try raising Beardies too
Hoping to breed my small lizards. I have all the appropriate bells and whistles. Now all I need is time, and longer warmer days. Everyone's Bru mating right now

@Leafhead They are both as iridescent but it really depends on the lighting. I have 16 snakes, 5 geckos, and 4 tarantulas. That's all I'm going to have for reptiles and inverts for awhile.

Aren't you glad you used tongs?

JimG Level 8 Dec 2, 2018

a sign of intelligence

Sometimes they miss the tongs and get me instead. I’ve been bitten enough times and it’s no big deal. My biggest worry is that they break their teeth so getting any non-food object out of their mouths requires patience and care.

Do you feed her in a different enclosure than her main habitat?

No I do not. Feeding outside the enclosure is no longer the accepted or recommended practice when feeding snakes. And I never have done that anyway.

@graceylou It’s been years since I had a snake. I didn’t realize that practice had changed. Interesting.

What’s the rationale behind the new method?

@SurvivorSteph, @graceylou I’m curious too! I am in no way snake smart...I have a 4 year old albino corn snake (once my son’s) that has only been fed in a separate space since that’s what I was advised. I just want to do what’s best for her...?

@SurvivorSteph Moving a snake to another space to feed can cause extra stress and can result in higher chance of regurgitation.

@Karuk I would just keep to the same routine if it has been going well. One of my snakes, Maya, my Pueblan milk snake, I have to feed in a box, otherwise she won't come out to eat. I don't handle her after feeding and simply open the top of the box for her to crawl out of. If she's fine being fed as she has been, I think changing her routine might be more stressful.

I'm a member of the local reptile society and the current consensus is to feed in enclosure. A few years ago the majority supported feeding in another location.
