Pandora wanted to come out for a stroll today when I was cleaning her tank. She's a ruby-eyed lavender Cali king. She's also both striped and banded (Cali kings are normally banded, but there are striped morphs; sometimes you find a combo in the same snake). She's about 12 years old now but was gifted to me when she was may be 6 months old. She came in a box so I named her Pandora (she came out of Pandora's box). She was the meanest beast when younger (nailed me numerous times) but has mellowed out a lot since a few years ago.

That's a gorgeous king, but do you remain friends with someone who gives you mean animals.

Seriously though, I don't consider snakes to be mean, but defensive and scared or even just startled can have an identical effect.

I do know she’s not being mean. Just extra defensive. But I like my snakes feisty. That’s why I like kings especially Cali kings. I don’t mind being bitten. It’s always my fault. I just worry they would break teeth or hurt themselves in some way. But Cali kings are well known for being extra feisty. The person who got her for me was my stepdaughter so I guess I can’t unfriend. And I had wanted a ruby-eyed lavender Cali. Pandora was extremely high strung though. I had two other Calis then as well as they were pretty calm.

@graceylou She seems pretty cool in the photos.

I don't have any snakes so my reptile experience is with the local wild species. I have "rescued" many from locales where they would have been in danger. The people I "helped" were grateful, but probably would be less so, if they knew how far I relocate them. It's funny how many people think I do this for them.

Black rat snakes are usually very defensive at first but calm down quickly when handled. Northern water snakes never calm down. They try to bite you as long as you handle them.

@JimG Wild species have good reason to be defensive. There are many predators. Captive bred reptiles have never met predators but still have the instincts. Either way you just have to be smart in handling them.

@graceylou I have been bitten several times. I never blame the snake; it's always my fault. I don't use handling tools on nonvenomous snakes, and the rat snakes I mentioned are extremely quick. They also have needle sharp teeth which fortunately are very short and inflict very little pain.
