That did happen to me. It was also a black rat snake. A bite from them is little more than a scratch. In my case it was coming out of the vent on to the dash when I saw it. When I pulled him out, he escaped on to the floor. I ended up very carefully extracting him from under my seat while he tried to wrap himself around the brackets and pull away.
I got him out and released him with my son's help. I couldn't keep driving while I dealt with him though. The care had a standard transmission.
