My best friend and I collected some standing water from the field, and watched tardigrades for half an afternoon once. We were drinking also; but the water bears were great!

An inexpensive microscope with a smart phone eyepiece attachment worked great- and without eyestrain
They've just discovered a new species of waterbear. Don't have the link.
