I think if a peson is to have more than one cat, i is preferable that they be litter mates, so they get along better.
Right now we have three. Sasha, a short hair calico, who when she first arrives was called "the kitten", but now is "the old lady cat". She loves attention, bu doesn't like to be picked up or held. Whiskers, a silver tabby, who came from a rescue, and is now our youngest even if he is now over 2 years old. He is the sweetest and most loving cat, to us, but for the other cats he is a bi of a bully. Then there is Iris, who my nephew got from a rescue when he lived in Seattle and brought back with him when he moved back during the pandemic. She is a long haired cat with Tuxedo markings. Her nick names are "the fluffy cat" and "Miss Hiss". She also doesn't like to be picked up or held, but yet is very demanding about getting us to open doors for her. She will tolerate being petted, but may for no apparent reason turn around and viciously attack.
