So I'm currently working on my aerobic base training (did 18-19 miles on the cycle today, testing out Lydiard's method to see if I could adapt it to biking). It got me thinking, since I a building up an aerobic base, would it still be possible to include strength training in this phase ie do AB on monday, then do strength on tuesday etc. I ask because I have read (and posted) articles about HIIT training and how strength training could be done concurrently. I have also read (and been taught in my strength conditioning courses) that when developing a training program for periodization, it is usually wise to break the schedule into phases, with a base phase in which you work on only building your aerobic conditioning, then strength in which you work on utilizing that cardio for strength gains, followed by SAQ (depending on sport).
I lean toward mixing, under the view of fitness as a means to attain general physical preparedness. In real life, you are likely to face challenges that tax multiple aspects of your physical capacity. Train accordingly.

Posted by SilviaParkI had my first triathlon in Sunday, an indoor USATri60. Lots of room for improvement, but I'm just a beginner swimmer, and haven't taken my bike on the road yet :)
