So I did a HIIT workout for an hour, and have just read that ideally it should end after half an hour max. What are your thoughts?

HIIT done correctly can't last an hour. Warm up,HIIT, maybe a little cool down can be done in 12 minutes, almost never more than 30. The HIIT portion is by necessity short.

@VAH1979 A Tabata protocol can be done in 4 minutes. Add five for a warmup and three for a cool down, 12 minutes, done. Just make sure that during the Tabata you make your heart scream, get into the pain cave. That's plenty three times a week, perhaps twice if you are already fit.
