Can you explain to me the physiological reasoning why a HIIT workout should be no longer than 30 minutes?
Probably because that is an overtraining threshold. 30 minutes for fast running is very harsh on the tendons, ligaments, spinal column, etc. so thirty minutes is the cap.
HIIT works because it stimulates your metabolism and simply makes you work harder. But it's not meant to cause an overtraining syndrome.
Can someone explain to me what an HIIT workout is?
HIIT stands for "High intensity interval training"
Basically, you are running very fast for a short amount of time, and then you take a short cool-down period. Then you repeat the cycle. There is a specific percentage of your maximum heart rate that you keep yourself at to keep track of how much work you're doing.
