Cycling vs running. I’ve started jogging/walking most every day on a good loop around my hilly neighborhood. I used to ride my road bike on a regular basis and was in decent shape - until about 6 years ago when my life started going to hell in a hand basket for a second time.

I’ve found stepping out the door without having to prep the bike alluring and incredibly convenient but also find my knees bothering more than they ever did when cycling.

I guess I need to get my bike out and going again? My knee pain is soreness - not debilitating as much as irritating. On a few days I’ve decided just to fast walk the loop and not jog/walk it.

Any runners here deal with knee pain ? Do I need better shoes ?

Well - I did go to the local running shoe place to see what they have. As a matter of disclosure I have small feet - generally a 6 in men’s. So it is not uncommon for me to have to buy a boys shoe or women’s shoe because of the lack of men’s shoes in that size. My Oboz hiking shoes - which I love - are women’s shoes. So the guy brings out a couple of pairs of shoes - one of which is bright pink. I comment about the color and he looks a bit sheepish and tells me he can’t tell because he is color blind ! Anyway I did find a pair that fit to their satisfaction. They seem to have much more cushioning and support that what I was wearing ( just a tennis shoe I bought for the gym years ago).

So we shall see - they certainly feel nice. If my knees get worse then i will back down to fast walking and now have a really good pair of walking shoes !

I am also going to go get my road bike out of the shed ( it is about two crises deep in the shed ) and get it cleaned up and start cycling a couple of days a week as I can fit it into my schedule. Fingers crossed.

I am taking things slowly - age forces that a bit it seems !

Thanks all for the advice.

The shoes I bought are boys shoes but seem well made. A bit garish on the color , but age also means I’m all out hoots to give about that !

Well , there generally are suggested guidelines
( see runners world experts ) as to how much one should increase one's running per week/ month
etc .
Going from not running to running every day is most assuredly gonna cause pain
somewhere , ha .
My guess would be that maybe a slower progression is whats called for along with maybe replacing the pavement with some low impact elliptical while the knees are a problem ?

Do you have a sports shop near by... they might be able to recommend a good shoe for your feet.

Best low impact high cardio is biking. Your knees will get worse. Stop. I used to jog and irreparably injured my knee by pushing myself. I turned to biking and my resting heart rate is 48 beats per minute. It's the best it's been since I was ten years old.

How often do you change your shoes? If you walk or run regularly, you might need to change shoes more often...I know when my knees start to hurt, it is time for new shoes! Cycling can be harder on knees than walking fast...it is the angle of the knee bend that affects your knee...good for you for getting out and getting exercise!

Posted by SilviaParkI had my first triathlon in Sunday, an indoor USATri60. Lots of room for improvement, but I'm just a beginner swimmer, and haven't taken my bike on the road yet :)
