Am I the only one who is absolutely dreading the gym in January? All the new year's resolution folks crowding up the place makes me a bit anxious each year. I applaud those trying to get fit & live a healthier lifestyle, but so many people give up too soon and it's back to 'the usual crowd' in February or March...

The part I don't like is when friends come to the gym, take up equipment, but then chat with each other instead of working out (they do a little, very slowly). Then I end up waiting and waiting.
Thankfully, most regulars are very good about that. Also, on work days, I go in the morning. That crowd is very focused and don't muck around.

Ah, yeah it's a bit more crowded, but only for about 3 weeks. New faces, new energy is fine with me. I need all the motivation I can get these days.

You are very kind...I too applaud them for their trial, but the problem they face (and one I also face a lot of) is the motivation. There are times when doing the workout switches from being an experience to being a repetitive boring routine, and this demotivates them. I would try to befriend one of them and work with them, give them a reason for going to the gym, ie to meet a new friend or workout buddy. The benefit would be that you can switch up workouts, make them more fun.

This is very sound advice. I admittedly am an introvert when it comes to the gym. I like to get my exercise in & not waste time socializing & such. I am certainly not rude or off putting if someone talks to me but I never strike up conversation with anyone. Maybe I should consider changing that.

Ah, I'm jealous!!

@tinebean I have had gym memberships over the years. For a long time I had a 24HR Fitness membership, a good one that allowed me to visit any club, anywhere. But my life is pretty busy and in order to carve out workout time, I was up at 3am on workout days. I have enough self-discipline to get it done at home and have a small multi-station machine and some free-weights, and a decent elliptical. All of the big equipment was purchased used so not a huge investment. =]

Every year. Fortunately, or not, I work out late at night so not an issue. We'll get through it!

My schedule is a bit wonky & I end up working out late sometimes too...it's pretty nice I must admit!

Fortunately I belong to a gym that experiences very little of this.
