I think that more people should use open source ie free software and operating systems like Linux. We need to demand that government move in that direction to save and force businesses to develop software for Linux due to its increasing market share should we be successful. All schools should contribute to open source as a public service and it has educational benefits in that most companies use open source.
You made me stop and think. I’ve always shied away from open source for concerns over compatibility (I work with others who use Word, for example). I also worry about bugs and other issues; the ones that are frustrating, but harmless, as well as the ones that break your heart (lost data). What I’m saying is: I don’t trust ooen source. So, tell me, what has your experience been? Should I reconsider?
Interesting. I had Lenux put into my desktop and then found out that it's not compatible with any popular programs. I had to buy a laptop so I could run my programs on it. I've never heard of open source. I've also heard that Lenux is fairly hard to use, unless you're really versed in it. I don't do much on it, but access my files, pics and the net.
Well, you started some good discussions! Many plusses for that! & you responded well. I sorta know what you're getting at, & can see your point, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to have a good opinion, so I'll just comment on the tone of the thread! Again, good post for thought & responsible reasoned responses! I like to see this!
I am all in favor of Open Source, but how exactly do you think government (Federal?) should force businesses to develop software for Linux? What manner of coercion do you think should be used? And why is such coercion necessary?
