It is truly nice to be here, amongst people who share two major attributes with me: being a non believer and being introverted. The non believer stuff is easier for me, though I rarely meet other black folks who feel and think as I do on the subject of religion. Coming out as an introvert has been harder, because most people assume I'm more of an extrovert, based on the various roles I've had in my adult life (sales, customer service, training, even bartending). It does feel good to reclaim and assert my true introverted self. Anyway, thanks for being here, everyone.

A good thing about this site is that we can socialise a bit if we want to but we can do it on our own terms and back off when we have had enough. Much easier than real life.

It is hard being an introvert in a society that prizes extroversion and aggression. Being introverted, I often feel kind of like the "odd one out." Sometimes people feel as though I am just not very friendly. But when I trust people, I can talk up a storm.

Yes, trust is huge with me. It's been hard to find.

Welcome. My guess is there is a significantly higher percentage of introverts who are non-believers than extroverts. We are less likely to get into the group thinking phenomenon

Thanks, Rudy. That's my thoughts, too.

I've never thought about it that way, but that would explain why I've never been a joiner of groups. I always just thought there was something wrong with ME. Maybe I can cross that erroneous assumption off the list of stuff I feel bad ABOUT!

@citronella lol. Yes I think you can

This is cool isn’t it. I think that many aspects of who we really are often get covered up by our need to function in the world and sometimes also a desire to fit in and be accepted. I have depression and anxiety also, some people are surprised to hear this because I hide it so well. I don’t want to burden others with this.
When I decided to be a caregiver, I didn’t realize how much I would have to pretend to be an extrovert at times, and how physically and emotionally close I would be to others all the time. I adjusted very well and being open and relaxed around my clients has become second nature. Many clients and their families have told me what a calming presence I am in their lives! They don’t know the anxiety that is always lurking just below the surface!
✌??

We're not necessarily socially inept.

Yes, I can identify with what you describe. I go along, just to get along. It can be very difficult.

I know what you mean. I have had an anxiety disorder for most of my life. I used to break out in hives on my neck and ankles. Zoloft helps. No one in my circle of friends believes I suffer with anxiety.

I also have depression and anxiety. I take meds and on occasion see a mental health professional. I try hard to hide it - try to put on a happy face. Maybe people don't pick up on the fact that I have my struggles. Of course, I have lots of company. Maybe some of the people around me who look happy and confident also have some problems with mood disorders.

People at work were befuddled that I was an introvert. It helps that I know these people for 20 years.
My brother the extrovert still cannot understand what it means to be an introvert. People think we can turn it on and off.
Anyway, welcome

jab60 Level 6 June 5, 2018

Thanks so much. I am not willing to turn it on and off anymore. I just want to be me.

I can relate to people thinking I am an extrovert because I am not at all shy but many people think the two are synonymous.
Welcome to the group.

Thank you. I've never thought of myself as shy, but I know as I've gotten older, I like dealing with other people much less.

@tony6149 Me too. Too many ignorant people out there.

@CreativelyMe Exactly.
