Different kinds of phlox together in a garden.
Don't you have phlox in your flower garden?

Thank You!

I have never grown phlox, but I sure have plenty of shade in my back yard. Question: Can it grow successfully in the hot and humid U.S. Gulf South?

@MikeInBatonRouge
Not sure? Check your garden centres to see if it's sold locally. It requires a moist climate to thrive but the hot sun makes it limp over. All flowers need a certain amount of sun but too much will kill them. Phlox will lift itself back up in the evening.
In my opinion, you can grow anything anywhere. It depends on how much effort and resources you're willing to put in. Good luck!

You bet! Phlox is a favorite for hummingbird moths and swallowtails. There is a tall variety with small, pink flowers on large, dense heads that blooms longer, and is a favorite of all butterflies!!

@Leafhead
I agree. Your phlox looks like a new one a neighbour gave us.
This butterfly is perched on a lily stalk.

Number one and two are showing a Caryopteris divaricata 'Snow Fairy' planted in the center of the phlox. The foliage has an unpleasant smell when you touch it but the flowers are amazing.

Breathtaking colours!

I love the colours too! Most of the blooms run together with some finishing when the last one starts to bloom.

I have perennial tall blue and white phlox in the front garden. It is so fragrant! There also used to be creeping magenta phlox in the herb garden, but my very enthusiastic snow plow guy plowed them away one snowy winter. Still hoping to find them somewhere in the lawn, like snowdrops I have.

You may find your phlox in the spring, it's very resilient. I weed out suckers from our phlox and find it growing in the compost pile. Even some creeping phlox will grow in complete shade. Good luck phlox hunting in the spring.

I had a lot of phlox. The creeping phlox is my favorite. No having to dig it up because of bare spots in the middle after a few years. Pretty coverage even when not in bloom.

You're right about dead spots in the growth of the root ball but I like the structure paniculata phlox creates in the garden. It's high maintenance compared to creeping phlox but has a stronger smell.

Awesome!

Thanks! Phlox is in my top ten list of perennials. Every flower garden needs phlox.

@flower_nut I agree

Used to have a bed of creeping phlox . Once they were planted , they took over that small area between the driveway and the sidewalk , and I never had to do anything about them ever again .

Cast1es Level 9 Dec 28, 2018

@Cast1es
Creeping phlox blooms early for us and some will cover an area quickly. I like when creeping phlox cascades over rocks or a wall. The paniculata phlox blooms in late summer.

Very pretty and varied.

@HeathenFarmer
There are so many different Phlox paniculata with different heights and growth habits.
