They call them pussy-willows,
But there’s no cat to see
Except the little furry toes
That stick out on the tree:
I think that very long ago,
When I was just born new,
There must have been whole pussy-cats
Where just the toes stick through---
And every Spring it worries me,
I cannot ever find
Those willow-cats that ran away
And left their toes behind!
Poem by Margaret Widdemer, published in 1928.
Actually, another favored plant of mine is the weeping Pussy Willow. [gardeningknowhow.com]
Had one is Seattle and, in the Spring, would catch people taking cutting for home decorations. Planted another one here so it should just about ready to bloom.
Thanks for the poem. I will print and laminate it and place it on the tree (it is located at the community Labyrinth.
They're rare in the wild...but can still be found. They're blooming their "pussies" right about now in the forests of southern NY, northern (rural) NJ and southern New England. Nice time for a walk in the woods!
