Real intimacy: knowledge of and acceptance of your authentic self, the ability and willingness to express that authentic self, and the ability and willingness to accept the authenticity of another. The more we adhere to these and exercise them, the greater intimacy we are capable of and will experience.

To me intimacy is created in a relationship where there is a strong connection and trust allowing each to be vulnerable. I am unsure what you meant by authentic. I interpret that to be vulnerable, curious about each other, and open to create something together. Without the shit that being human to get in the way of creating this kind of relationship.

Good luck looking for the scientific meaning behind all this ‘psycho babble’. I don’t think this is that easy and there’s no actual manual for understanding it. It’s a ‘knowing’ it’s a ‘feeling’ it’s understanding what authenticity means to you. That requires a VERY deep dive into your own psyche.

No disrespect, but this question has so much psycho babble in it that its unanswerable.

@Seeker3CO Read what you wrote and put it into a testable hypothesis. Can't be done.

@Seeker3CO I can't. Nor can anyone else absent rigorous term definition that stands up to analysis.Psychology uses scientific methods but is not a science.

@Seeker3CO I will defer to another time. No disrespect intended, and I applaud your effort to add value, Perhaps I don't get it.

How do you define, "authentic self?"

I had the same question. Although there is a lot of existential philosophy and psychology which describes it, the latest research suggests we are not individuals but "dividuals" - made up of competing subsystems, rather than a unified self.

@ejbman Have you been reading or listing to Sam Harris?

@Seeker3CO I'm getting addicted to Robert Wright and Sam Harris.

It's really hard to know how much we're fooling ourselves, fun trying to figure it out but still a tough slog

@Seeker3CO I listened to Evolution of God on audio and am slowly going through the Moral Animal.

There's at least two public discussions between Harris and Wright on youtube also, the first discussion over 10 years ago wasn't great but the one a few years ago was ok.

Hey, you're in CO. I think I'm there in October, I could drop off or just mail you Moral Animal?

recovering from hand surgery btw, typing is a pain...well in the thumb

@educatedredneck Yes, I've followed quite a bit of Sam Harris' work: books and podcasts. However, in this case, I was thinking of Harari's book Homo Deus, and his section describing (among others) Kahneman's work (such as that summarized in Thinking Fast and Thinking Slow).
