Rewatching Sense8 and I love this sentiment. I thought I'd share it here. Paraphrased for context.
"The violence that happens every day is petty and ignorant but ultimately it is true to who those people are. The real violence, the violence which I realize is truly unforgivable, is the violence that we do to ourselves when we are too afraid to be who we really are."
Be yourselves. Life is full of pain enough without us creating more pain for ourselves.
I always told my kids:
“It’s simple to be free. All you have to do is not care what others think and say about you. Notice I said ‘simple’, not ‘easy’, for as social creatures, our worst fear is to be ostracized”.
Concern about how others think of us leads to self enslavement. Shaming/guilt are how others attempt to control us. But they need our help. Don’t give it to them.
I loved Sense8, but this sounds like a big pile of dooky.
You don't think that not allowing yourself to be yourself simply to conform to society's idea of who you should be is a bad thing?
@Nukdookum Nope, not my point, but I wasn't very good at making it... I just left a cranky remark.
A lot of people suffer for really being themselves, and it's not self-inflicted. Some should suffer for being themselves, and don't. Pinochet? Died of old age, in his bed. "Mother" Teresa? Also died of old age, and was sainted for enabling the suffering of poverty-stricken people. Donald Trump? Lies, cheats, enables white supremacists, misogynists, transphobia and.... he became President.
Real violence is demonizing refugees, turning a country into an oligarchy, white supremacy, spousal abuse, gay bashing, bullying, colonialism, imperialism, war...
@ailurophile I agree. Life isn't fair. We should fight against all forms of violence. Those you mention are easy to recognize and even easier to fight against. The violence that people do to themselves is insidious and difficult to notice which makes it worse than those others in my view.
don't take it out on yourself. there are plenty of others to do it.
