She takes his name because they thought of marriage as the woman being subsumed back into the man. The creation story tells of a 'him' who is also a 'them':
Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
When this hermaphrodite creature is split, the 'him' has a primacy. It's a pity the Bible is so laconic. I would love to know what they were thinking.

Snore. Sunday school has finished and I tire of these nonsense tales. I prefer Spike Milligan and Roald Dahl; perhaps ask a believer?
