How strange. Myria, whom I haven't been with in 36 years, dies unexpectedly at 78, and I'm devasted. We were together for 17 years, since I was 20, until I was 36. We had no children, by choice.
Since we parted, I've had one marriage (24yrs.) and one live-in gf (11yrs.), and yet....it's Myria I miss. I feel no connection to the others.
She was my emotional support, and friend....we talked 3-5 times a week....she was very interested in my newly retired travels, and I would send her pictures of desert off-grid camping life. If a tragedy like this were to happen, she would be the first one I'd call...likewise with happy events, as small as seeing the new tiny moon. She'd answer the phone..."How it is...?"
Since I'm the closest family she had (!), she'll be cremated....I'll get her ashes, and she will travel with me at last.
No services....Her friends in the small town she lived in have asked me to write down my memories...I started thinking, the memories started coming, and it's going to be a small book before I'm done.
I suppose I'm damaged goods now, or at least wounded. These are feelings that I might have acknowledged before, and used more creatively, but I accept and embrace them now.
Sometimes memories are all we have as we grow older, and people move on or pass away; and they can be very special to us. I hope you writing down the memories of Myria will bring you comfort. Sending a big hug your way.
