Karelia is a region of East Finland and Russia…with its own culture and history which transcends all modern boundaries and borders. Here we have a traditional Finnish folk song, which translated means Swans, performed on the traditional Karelian stringed instrument the kantele which is plucked, by Anastasia Krasilnikova.
Lovely. I inherited something incredibly similar but we called it a table harp.
Nice thing to inherit…do you play it?
@Marionville No. I don't know how to tune it. It came to me very out of tune. My piano ended up with my now-dead brother and I hardly played it. Some 20 years ago I was given another piano but I have no room for it in my home so it is kept in my healing room. A concertina was taken from me by my first wife. She also took my Amati. She did quite well! I had a collection of recorders. I loved the sopranino. They went in my home fire along with a mandola, dulcimer and two classical guitars. A few days after a woman came and handed me Ted's guitar because she said he'd come to her in a dream and told her to do that. It sits right beside me. Later I bought a second hand made from a luthier friend. One has to have a spare on stage. I've had various others through my life. An early Yamaha 12 which was stolen. Later models were not nearly as good.
@Marionville Well here is a picture of mine. Not quite the same but basically it is. The upper level is a damper. Push down to stop sound.
@rogerbenham Oh…it looks very similar!
What a cool instrument! I love the sound it makes.
Yes…it’s lovely.
