Because we’re only I week away I’ve decided to post some seasonal festive music this week…both secular and religious…starting today with Adolphe Adam’s well loved Christmas song O Holy Night sung also in the original French (Cantique de Noel). It’s sung by two of the best known classical tenors of the late 20th century - Placido Domingo & Luciano Pavarotti, performed at Christmas In Vienna in 1999…
Can't go far wrong with those two. But a bit too operatic for my taste as a Baroque chorister.
Kind of surreal that so many "religious" songs are so good at least in terms of the musical composition.
They were quite often written because the composer was inspired by his faith to write music dedicated to God …in other cases Kings and nobles commissioned composers to write church music to prove their piety to the church and gain favour with the almighty & church hierarchy (supposedly). I’ve been singing this stuff all my life, I really enjoy it because it is quite beautiful, it’s also challenging to sing and very exhilarating & euphoric when you get it right.
@Marionville Especially if you're in a choir and hear all the other voices around you!
@pamagain Precisely! You definitely get a rush of endorphins singing with others in a choir.
