There are many reminders of centuries of Roman dominance throughout Europe, and there are numerous Roman sites now tourist attractions…walls, bridges, villas, aqueducts and amphitheatres, some now UNESCO World Heritage sites. Many of them are outside Italy, France has its share, especially of amphitheatres and they now hold music concerts and Shakespearean dramas in them. There are three notable ones in the South of France near to the Mediterranean in Nimes, Arles, and Frejus. The latter one in Frejus is on the Côte d’Azur and has now been fully restored, but in 1987 when a-ha performed there, it was in the process of renovation. Here we catch the band in rehearsal with their latest release at that time which was the James Bond theme from The Living Daylights….
I wonder who was the first person to say "Hey, we are tired of this Roman thing. We just want to be Italians now."
Ha ha…good point! I think a unified Italy is relatively new as far as history goes…the United Kingdom of Italy only occurred mid 19th century. Until then they were a motley bunch of kingdoms, city states and other loose alliances and states. The unified kingdom only lasted until 1946 when a referendum was held and Italy became a republic.
