When I was at Primary School in Edinburgh, many many decades ago…this was one of the traditional Scottish songs we regularly sang…and I still can remember every word of. The Mingulay Boat Song was originally sung in Gaelic of course but as I was from the lowland belt where ‘the Gallic’ wasn’t spoken, we sang it in English. I found this version which is being sung by a duo from The Netherlands- Margot Merah & Sophie Janna who call themselves “The Lasses” …one of the best versions in my opinion. Btw Mingulay, an island in the Outer Hebrides 12 miles south of Barra, has remains of Iron Age and Viking settlements and evidence of over 2000 years of human habitation. Due to neglect and lack of maintenance by it’s absentee landlords on the mainland, it was abandoned by its Gaelic-speaking residents in 1912 and is now uninhabited, and which since has become an important breeding colony for puffins, kittiwakes and razor-bills.
It was long a favourite at the Blackpool FC. Whether from Alex Campbell visits or our own Taverner's Brian Osborne's singing I don't know - I couldnt find a copy from either on YouTube.
However here is Brian Osborne's rendition of "Farewell to Fiunary" - if the url doesn't start at that song it's at 15:00 on the album A side
I thought I knew it well but decided I did not. Lovely.
