Regarding the Event Horizon Telescope that the article mentions - that increases the resolution of the "target" so it can be more easily seen and analyzed - I would surmise that the process utilizes the principle of interferometry! Interferometry was one of the advances that the Keck Telescopes in Hawai'i were planned to incorporate, but somehow didn't come up to expectations or something. So the project was discontinued. But it seems the principle has found new life in the Event Horizon Telescope. I would love to have some of the experts in this group explain to this layman what is happening in this seemingly advanced, but so far, not very successful process, of state-of-the-art astronomy.
