The word "collision" is also slightly misleading here, since the gaps between the individual stars in the galaxies are so huge, the odds of any stars actually colliding are infinitesimally small.

It shows what was happening 425 million years ago so the news is a little stale 
Alot will have happened there since then.
To put it in proportion this picture shows the situation over two hundred million years before dinosaurs evolved on the Earth.
