Sorry, can't agree with this, sets a bad precedent.
I see it the same as Howard giving our diggers a bonus when they went to East Timor. It's saying to all that came before them "Thanks for your sacrifice suckers".
If they wish to pay volunteers #1 make it Australia wide and #2 all volunteers eg looking after homeless is arguably more dangerous at times than fire fighting. This is impractical so bwtter to just not do it at all. Talk about knee jerk reactions.
Volunteer fire fighters are essential. They should be paid when they are called up just like army reserves.
Other volunteer jobs are less urgent and less dangerous and you can pick the hours.
agreed.
Volunteers should not be paid, but they should have all their job-related expenses reimbursed.
There SHOULD be some form of financial recompense paid to their families though, since the families are mostly left without the regular income provided by the spouse/partner who is out fighting the fires, etc, in a volunteer capacity in my opinion.
Ask yourself, How many children did NOT see a parent on Xmas Day BECAUSE that parent was battling the fires, How many families had a very meagre Xmas because the family funds were being stretched to almost or beyond the breaking point?
Yes, pay those who are family members, etc, Insure the lives of the Volunteers, make sure that the Government ensures that the Firies get all the nutrition, rest, support and comforts, etc, they WILL require AND simply rely upon the likes of the Salvos, etc, to jump in and fill the gaps.
