I just learned of the "if by whiskey" fallacy and saw the "if by God" fallacy with it as an example. I thought this group might find it interesting like I did: [logicallyfallacious.com]

It is interesting. But the writer seems to have managed to contradict his own purpose. If that purpose is geared towards attempting to convince others that both sides to an issue are fallacy. I'll give a degree of acceptance to the one using God as an example. Although I can find both good and bad that this belief provides, It is as the writer claims, somewhat of a fallacy being there's no real evidence of such a being. It would however fall back onto those organized religions to produce the outcomes within the article. On the other hand. The second example chosen does actually list both good and bad points to the use of whiskey. We have a real substance and real consequences of its use both good and bad. Studies have backed the bad consequences, therefore most of society has a degree of regulated information for fact. I can replace whiskey with any type of alcohol consumption and tell you I've personally seen and lived a number of the bad descriptions in the article and can attest them as fact. And have drank enough in my years to tell you that the good in the article are also a measure of fact. So the claim that little factual information is learned from that particular example is flawed and indeed does provide one towards developing an opinion towards its use. I would even go as far as claiming that example could be put to good use in a measure of education towards youth and people struggling with alcohol abuse. Being it has many of the fine points within describing what its use produces and can lead to if abused. The attempt to relate this with politics as the writer is, quite frankly, what I see, an attempt to dumb down anyone in regard to seeking factual information. As though the writer is purposely attempting to manage one's perception that what ever rhetoric they may find is a fallacy and useless. When I would argue the problem with most of our political information is a collection of selective, manufactured, and deceptive with a purpose. I see the writer as thwarting off anyone to except factual information in their attempt to search out such information in a means to discourage one to even seek!
