ROBERT PARRY: An Apology & Explanation, Two Years On

On New Year’s Eve 2017, less than a month before he would die, CN founder Bob Parry wrote a manifesto on the remit of journalism and its threatened demise, a chilling forecast of what was to come.

{The unpleasant reality that the past year has brought home to me is that a shockingly small number of people in Official Washington and the mainstream news media actually believe in real democracy or the goal of an informed electorate.}

Democracy has from the beginning been at war with wealth and power. Democracy is limited and controlled, to keep the mass of society in which the few within the wealthy and powerful see as a threat. Keeping them ignorant and scared while controlling their freedoms must be accomplished.

{Ironically, the ugly personal characteristics of Donald Trump – his own contempt for facts and his crass personal behavior – have stripped the mask off the broader face of Official America.}

In other words. Rather than using decades of knowledge within Trump's history to stop his march towards the white house, both parties and their media participated in corrupt elections and information warfare, during both the primary and general, to unleash a monster onto the world society.

{Though I don’t like the word “weaponized,” it began to apply to how “information” was used in America. The point of Consortium News, which I founded in 1995, was to use the new medium of the modern Internet to allow the old principles of journalism to have a new home, i.e., a place to pursue important facts and giving everyone a fair shake. But we were just a tiny pebble in the ocean.

The trend of using journalism as just another front in no-holds-barred political warfare continued – with Democrats and liberals adapting to the successful techniques pioneered mostly by Republicans and by well-heeled conservatives.}

After facing battles within the main stream media to expose Reagan in the Iran-Contra affair, and losing Gary Webb in a manufactured information war to hide the truth behind the crack epidemic that rose in the 80's. This type of information warfare would go on to become what we face today in the "fake news" cycle of the MSM. Not only do we face this managed perception on a repetitive pace daily, but the establishment and the main stream media they use as their tool against us now, especially since the 2016 election cycle, use that very term "fake news" against us as they target more factual news outlets of independent journalist by the likes of Parry and many others who have found it necessary to leave MSM to get the facts out. Many have been fired or simply pressured out for going against the grain.
