How did your family and friends react to you becoming vegan? I live in a small town in the midwest and the reception was less than stellar to say the least. Bad jokes, bad attitudes.....I honestly got a worse reception for becoming vegan than I did for being an atheist. Which was really confusing.
I'm so sorry you have gotten that reaction. People are really sensitive about food, especially when they know they need to adjust their diet but can't or won't do it. My dad didn't care at all, and my mom was supportive but a little confused at times about what I could eat (she loves to cook). My MIL has been vegetarian for as long as I've known her.
I was really hurt when, about 2-3 years into my WFPB diet, my mother bought a cheesecake for my birthday dinner at her house. I made some comment, maybe asking why she got cheesecake, and she just replied, well everyone loves cheesecake! My husband, not fully WFPB at the time, said, everyone except your vegan daughter! It really did upset me. But she's gotten a lot better. I think she just forgets at times--she's 76 now.
Well I just think that some are just jealous because they will not do it for themselves.
Big town in the Midwest with similar results except for my family who are about 50% vegan.
I explain what the medical results were to changing my diet and most people look shocked and tell me that it’s not something they are capable of, followed by excuses about which animal product they “just couldn’t give up”
My ex mil would continuously ask me if I ate chicken after 10 years of being with her son.
It's an endless source of the same jokes for them. Maybe for a vocal few. If i were to analyze the data, I bet 95% don't care. 5% either mock me or are interested.
