Watched this doc last night. Of course there are many good vege-docs out there already. This one does a good job of emphasizing how even huge football players and bodybuilders don't need meat. It also has several big names associated/in it which helps with awareness. [gamechangersmovie.com]
A lot of the science surrounding diet and nutrition is still not fully understood, movies like this definitely help to bring awareness to the possibility that the information that’s been provided to the public was based on unreviewed science or industry-funded research. We’re only now finding out how destructive the “American” diet truly is. Veganism, while altruistic, does not fully meet the nutritional needs of most regular people, let alone high-performance athletes.
I’m not a doctor or a scientist, but I pay attention to what I eat and I try to stay informed about what modern medicine says about nutrition. There are so many confusing and misleading sources that it’s difficult to tell the difference between what was bad for you yesterday and what’s good for you today. Whole-food, plant based eating is the closest thing to what our bodies have evolved to consume, but the nutritional density of some animal meat far exceeds most of the items in the produce section. It’s hard to argue for a strict plant-based diet when supplementation is still a nutritional requirement.
Since you say "veganism... does not meet the nutritional needs of... high performance athletes" I have to assume you did not watch this movie. Let me also remind you that you drive a car daily, wear glasses and would surely lend a cripple a wheelchair. but by all means, don't use any supplements as a crutch to help you be more altruistic to animals.
Do you mean to suppose that those high performance athletes aren’t taking b12 supplements or using powdered protein to meet their specific nutritional requirements? There’s nothing wrong with using supplements to fill the nutritional gaps, it’s irresponsible to suggest that 100% of the nutritional needs are met with a plant based diet. James Wilks mentions in the movie that it is no longer possible to obtain the necessary daily supply of b12 from plant based food sources.
I don’t represent myself as a vegan, as I have not espoused the ethos of veganism, I try to educate others on the distinction between vegan and plant based because I want people to make informed decisions about diet and lifestyle. I, personally, take several supplements because I am aware of some of the deficiencies in my diet and I tend to purchase those derived from plant sources rather than animal. When I evangelize about plant based eating, I am careful to include some of the shortcomings of the lifestyle because I don’t want people to end up malnourished and unhealthy.
No, but so what, they are vegan supplements. I think at least one of the athletes said he consumes a protein drink; likewise they are probably supplementing the nutrients they aren't easily getting straight from a fruit or vegetable, but they are also not getting heart disease, asthma, and type 2 diabetes. I don't understand why you think a supplement sourced from a plant doesn't count as a plant-based food. We isolate and extract ingredients from plants all the time. (Consider spices.) No diet is perfect, because life isn't perfect. We evolve and make do with what is available, but now that nutrition has been studied, so long as we have access to these giant grocery stores that exist in every city in America, we can choose compassion. For this reason I feel blessed to live in the modern age. Thanks for informing people about nutrition. Yes, I definitely tell my friends what vegan protein shake I recommend and what nutrients are important to make sure you get, including vitamin D3, K2, iron, calcium, zinc, and of course B12. Pretty sure that meat eaters are buying a lot of those supplements too or their manufacturers would soon be out of business. Eating meat doesn't protect you from a B12 deficiency. Did you know that most of the B12 manufactured today is fed to livestock? because B12 originated from bacteria in certain types of soil, so factory farmed and even many free range animals aren't getting it either unless it's supplemented in their feed. Omega 3s also, can be obtained from marine algae, which is where fish get it, and we can consume in a supplement, or from flaxseed and hemp. Even B12 now is found in a certain common aquatic plant (also high in ALA).
No one ever needs meat. I appreciate the facts and the science that was easy to comprehend.
